“Clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education are basic necessities for a healthy environment and a productive life.” – Rotary International

Last weekend, the Rotaract Club of Antigua (RCA), donated twelve 200-gallon water tanks valued at XCD $5,000 to members of the disabled community. These individuals were identified by Mr. Bernard Warner from the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Persons with Disabilities (ABAPD).

The club’s Board of Directors identified this need given Rotary’s area of focus, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, and the current state of drought in Antigua and Barbuda. It is the club’s hope that these water tanks will promote rainwater harvesting among the recipients. Furthermore, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this will encourage hand washing and proper hygiene.

President of the Rotaract Club of Antigua, Ti-anna Harris, stated that “the disabled are one of the most vulnerable among us and we really wanted to help them out when identifying a target group for this project.” Some of the disabilities witnessed while presenting these tanks were persons with vision impairment, amputees and physical disabilities. In the end, these residents were very appreciative of the donation.

Other areas of focus for Rotary International include: Economic and Community Development, Maternal and Child Health, Basic Education and Literacy, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Peace and Conflict Resolution and Supporting the Environment. The Rotaract Club of Antigua aims to carry out community service projects within these areas. Individuals over 18 years who are interested in joining the organization should reach out via social media – Rotaract Antigua on Facebook and Instagram.

The Rotaract Club of Antigua would like to extend thanks to Mr. Benjamin for his assistance in the execution of this project.
