
Rondre Robinson of Swetes and Okive Banton, a Jamaican resident of Golden Grove Extension, were fined for drug-related offenses in the magistrate’s court on Wednesday, presided over by Senior Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel.
Robinson was fined $30,000 for possessing 145.5 grams of cannabis, with 18 months to pay or face two years in jail. His January 8, 2025, arrest marked his third drug-related offense.
Banton was fined $40,000 for possessing 1.25 pounds of cannabis with intent to sell, with two years to pay or serve a two-year prison term. His cash (EC $2,160.00 and US $20.00) was confiscated, and the seized cannabis will be destroyed.

What ever has become of the much touted cannabis industry of which this administration spoke so glowingly? There are persons on island who have, it seems, received permission to cultivate cannabis legally as part of a medicinal cannabis project. An update is urgently demanded since authorities continue to fine and confine persons found in possession of large quantities of the herb which according to said authorities “will be.destroyed”. Please make this make sense!
