As millions watched the live 2020 Tokyo Olympic games opening ceremony across the globe, swimmer Samantha Roberts and track star Cejhae Greene proudly acted as flag-bearers for the Antigua and Barbuba Olympic team.

Six athletes, including two swimmers, will be participating at the summer Games, representing the widest diversity of Antiguan and Barbudan sports since 2000, and continuing the country’s representation at the Games which began in 1976.

Per the Olympic schedule, swimmers Samantha Roberts and Stefano Mitchell will compete in the 50m (Heat 5) and 100m (Heat 3) freestyle respectively. Mitchell’s race, the 100m freestyle, will be held on July 27th, and Roberts’ event of 50m freestyle on July 30th. Locally, both athletes’ events will be held at 6:00 am and broadcasted on NBC. Each swimmer holds the current National Record in their respective event.

Teammates Cejhae Greene and Joella Lloyd will both compete in the 100m track events beginning July 31st and July 30th.

Meanwhile, sailor Jalese Gordon, in her first Olympics, finished 43rd in the Women’s One Person Dinghy Laser Radial event on July 25th, and boxer Alston Ryan, a Pan Am Games Bronze Medalist, lost to Armenian Hovhannes Bachkov in the Men’s Lightweight match at the Kokugikan Arena on the same date.

Both Mitchell and Roberts have been training for over ten years—this Olympics represents a hard-earned peak, climbed through dedication and sacrifice. Representing at these Olympic Games is a tangible achievement, combining personal goals with the immense pride that comes from etching your country’s name on a global stage. Swimming is an intense sport which grows immense reserves of mental devotion. It is incredibly relevant within Antigua and Barbuda, spreading its roots within communities of all ages and interests. President of the ABSF, Dr. Derek Marshall, feels this Olympics is particularly important. “It is a huge honor for an athlete to be nominated by their country to be a flag bearer at the pinnacle of the international sports stage, the Olympics. Antigua and Barbuda chose to bestow such an honor on Samantha Roberts (swimming) and Cejhae Greene (athletics). The ABSF is very proud of this historical achievement and Samantha is undoubtedly an exemplary athlete. Samantha and Stefano have worked hard and earned the requisite selection for these particular Games. I have full confidence that they will do their country and themselves proud.  The ABSF will like to join the rest of the country in voicing their support of all of our Olympic athletes at the Tokyo Games.”

  1. When someone can tell me what the adult population is then we can talk about a percentage of the adult population that we need to vaccinate to reach heard immunity. Don’t come tell me we need to vaccinate 80000 adults so 80% of the population is adults?
All am seeing is a segregation gimmick being pushed to devide and rule just like this red and blue have done for many years. We cant continue to let politicians continue to devide us and enrich themselves and put claws in place that when they get out of power nothing can be done. Then we still have to pay them full pension till the day they die. If we don’t come together as a people now and respect each others rights and choice we will be lost forever.
