Deputy Director of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Morvin Fiedtkou, reports a significant rise in call volumes over the past year. Despite the challenges, he commended his team’s adaptability and performance.

Fiedtkou attributes the surge partly to increased public awareness of EMS services, with many viewing ambulances as a quick solution for medical issues. While this awareness is positive, it strains resources, as emergency services must prioritize critical cases under triage protocols, leading to delays for less urgent calls.

Addressing concerns about expanding the ambulance fleet, Fiedtkou noted that demand tends to outpace available resources, regardless of fleet size.

  1. It is largely the weight of thanklessness and political discord that threatens to keep this fair country bogged down in a mire of stagnation. How many citizens around the world today can state proudly that when they summon an ambulance , one arrives and once the situation warrants it, they are swiftly transported to the Hospital FREE OF CHARGE! An ambulance ride to the hospital costs the patient berweenUSD$700 and $1200 minimum!!!! Yet here in Antigua and Barbuda all we do is gripe, cuss, complain and demand that the Government increase the resources for the services. God is really good and patient with us. Thank you, Father.🙏🏽🙏🏽

  2. The only way the calls will be reduced is if and when the service at SLBMC is improved or if the community health centres become mini hospitals with facilities staffed 24/7. People use the Ambulance as a device to get urgent and immediate medical attention. The alternative is to go to the hospital on your own steam and sit and wait for hours.
