1

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Ecclesiastical and Faith-Based Affairs, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, expressed his sincere apology to the Rastafarian community for the long-standing societal oppression and religious persecution they have endured in the history of St. Kitts and Nevis.

During the National Assembly on June 20, Dr. Hanley introduced the Rastafari Rights Recognition Bill, 2023, as a tangible step towards rectifying the injustices faced by Rastafarians.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for Rastafarians in the emerging medicinal cannabis and cannabis tourism industries while ensuring their freedom to practice their religion without any restrictions.

Dr. Hanley also highlighted the significance of June 20, 2023, as a historic day in the Rastafari struggle, as their constitutional rights will be formally recognized and protected by law.

Additionally, he expressed his satisfaction in presenting and leading the debate on the Freedom of Conscience (Cannabis) Bill, 2023, which was successfully passed on the same day.
