Government revenues in Antigua and Barbuda saw an increase in January, bolstered by a strong tourism season, but concerns remain over expenditure levels, according to a Cabinet review of the country’s financial performance.

Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s Office, Lionel Hurst, said January is typically one of the best months for revenue collection, with high visitor arrivals contributing to economic activity across the tourism and services sectors.

“In January, we do very well; it is one of the months in which many tourists arrive in Antigua, so business is vigorous,” Hurst said.

“The hotels, taxi cabs, and other sectors benefit significantly, though there tends to be a slowdown after the first quarter.”

While the increase in revenue was welcomed, government officials discussed strategies to manage spending more effectively. One area under review is travel expenditure, which has been flagged as a significant cost.

“We expend a significant sum of money each year on travel,” Hurst said.

“We are looking at ways to reduce that by using a government agency instead of private travel agents to arrange bookings.”

Other areas of spending, including infrastructure projects and public sector wages, continue to place pressure on the national budget. Treasury officials presented an overview of revenue streams and the challenges in balancing necessary expenses.

Despite these concerns, Hurst said the government remains optimistic about the financial outlook.

“We’re in a good place at this time, and the Cabinet was very pleased to learn about that.”

The review forms part of ongoing efforts to assess fiscal performance and ensure sustainable economic management as the year progresses

  1. STOP SPENDING
CLEAR UP where there is bad SPENDING.. i am sure there us some area’s that could be cleaned up.
Be strong.. Weak governments would want to raise more money. That’s not the issue. Spending inefficiently and wastefully is what good governance gets rid of .
You can do it team red.

  2. Monitory policy and fiscal policy goes hand in hand. Antigua and Barbuda spends more monies than we earn as a habit. We lack financial discipline. Every year we highlight and celebrate new heights in our revenue collection but the more monies we collect in revenue, the more we spend and so our overall economic situation remains the same or even worst than the previous year. Our overall fiscal situation will never improve with such continous reckless spending.
