The reopening of the Boys’ Training School in Antigua, initially expected in January 2025, has been delayed as authorities work to address staffing and equipment shortages.
During Thursday’s Cabinet press briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst confirmed that while progress has been made, additional resources are required before the facility can resume operations.
“They needed some equipment as well as some furniture, and they needed to employ a few more people to ensure that the boys are adequately supervised,” Hurst said.
The institution, which serves as a rehabilitation center for at-risk youth, was previously under the Ministry of Health but has now been placed under the Ministry of Social Transformation, headed by Senator Rawdon Turner. The change in oversight is expected to streamline efforts to provide the necessary support services for the facility.
Hurst did not provide a revised timeline for the reopening but assured that efforts are ongoing to complete the necessary preparations.
“There is a need for security within the facility as well, so every effort is being made to ensure that the Boys’ Training School is completed, well outfitted, and does not pose a security risk—not to those who reside there nor to those who live in its neighborhood,” he said.
The government has yet to confirm when all outstanding issues will be resolved, but officials say the reopening remains a priority.

The commitment to reopening the Boys’ Training School is commendable, as it provides a structured environment to help young men get back on the right path. Investing in such programs is essential for long-term social development. That said, delays in the reopening raise questions about planning and resource allocation. If this facility is truly a priority, why has it taken so long to complete? The government needs to address these setbacks more effectively to ensure that at-risk youth receive the support they need without unnecessary delays.
The authorities must ensure that this project remains a priority and that resources are allocated efficiently to avoid further setbacks.
