Registration at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus begins today.

This was revealed by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles at a press conference in Antigua & Barbuda on Monday.

The newest landed UWI campus will begin with three schools; the School of Health and Behavioural Sciences, the School of Management, Sciences and Technology, and the School of Humanities and Education.

“As you know we are a two-semester University so one group of students will enroll for this first semester”, Sir Hilary explained.

Another group of students who might wish to look at other programs and who need more time can enrolled in the second semester beginning in January, he said.

“I think that we are going to be surprised by the demand that will grow in the second semester when people have had more time to put themselves in order and organize themselves. So, we are going to be advertising a news slate of programs… in this first semester to target you for the first semester”, the Vice-Chancellor stated.

One of the new programs recognizes the experiences the OECS has had with hurricanes, Sir Hilary said.

“We are going to be offering a post graduate diploma climate smart studies and resilience, which is focused specifically on the experiences of the OECS and we’re going to be rolling that program out in the second semester”.

“It is tailor made for the training of people who have had or who will have to deal with issues of recovery from disasters”.

“We’re expecting maybe about 200 or so to enroll for this first semester and another 200 or 300 in the second semester so within this first academic year we are looking to 500, 600 in this first academic year enrolled in semester one and semester two”.

“We are going to evolve and I’m giving five islands within the first five-year cycle to meet that threshold of having faculties and by then we should have several thousand students, several thousand students enrolled at Five Islands”, Professor Beckles said.

Professor Stafford A. Griffith was appointed as Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal for the Five Islands Campus earlier this month.

  1. Does anybody else find it weird that the official UWI website doesn’t even feature the Antigua UWI campus?

Seems to me that UWI is already treating the Antigua unequally to the others.

Also, what PhD programs are being offered at the Antigua campus? We don’t need a place that issues just more masters degrees.

  2. History in the making right before our very own eyes. Like the birth of a newborn child. I do hope we give Gaston his flowers when he is alive. Papa Bird toke us to Independence and out of the cane fields. Lester Bird gave us a cruise harbour, shopping center, MSJMC and financial sector, Gaston Brown bought us WIOC, Solar Energy and a University. And more is to come.
Oh yes Baldwin Spencer brought us a new airport.

    • Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! “The Afrocentric scholar or practitioner knows that one way to express Afrocentricity is called marking. Whenever a person delineates a cultural boundary around a particular cultural space in human time, this is called marking.” – Dr. Molefi Asante!

Here, it has been done with the Movement from The Salt Ponds of Five Islands in which our Ancestors toiled to Creation of The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus, complete with three schools; the School of Health and Behavioural Sciences, the School of Management, Sciences and Technology, and the School of Humanities and Education to serve the best interest of people of African descent, that is, black people as an historically oppressed population! This is the fundamental necessity for advancing the political process of “Entrepreneurial Socialism” as envisioned and articulated by the Honourable Gaston Browne, Prime Minister. Minister of Finance & Corporate Governance & Public Private Partnerships! As De Vendors at Da Bridge say: “All definitions are autobiographical!”

Congratulations to the Honourable Michael Browne, Minister of Education, Science & Technology! We must salute the efforts of The Honourable Baldwin Spencer, Former Prime Minister and our Benefactors the Peoples Republic of China for the Facilities and Infrastructure!

Present and future generations mus be prepared to study and act upon the interpretation that we as builders of solid institutions and a Caribbean Civilization are central to our history, not someone else’s! We must examine and see our people as centered and central in our Caribbean history and ourselves as agents, actors, and participants rather than as marginals on the periphery of the political, educational, economic socio-cultural, technological, legal or ecological experience!

      • I would want to big up Baldwin Spencer were it not that he did not agree with he building being used for the purpose of a University. He lacked the vision that the Hon. Gaston Brown has and fought it every step of the way. But sure the Chinese government is to be applauded for yet another remarkable contribution to our country and our nation on the hole. And our friends in the north want us to break that relationship. They must be crazy. What have they done for us lately?
Look how many students leaving for China once again to study for free, with a free stipend. While our people are spending thousands of dollars to educated others in North America. No free rides.
