Just hours after the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) announced Lamin Newton as the party’s candidate for the All-Saints Constituency in the upcoming general elections, one of Newton’s primary opponents, Regis Burton, has voiced dissatisfaction with the outcome and called for a run-off.

In a letter addressed to ABLP and sent to Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Burton outlined several concerns regarding the primary process, citing what he perceived as shortcomings and irregularities.

Burton’s letter highlighted issues with the initial voters’ list, which he claimed contained numerous inaccuracies, leading to certain individuals being excluded despite their involvement.

He noted that even the revised list, sent out two days before the primary, still had errors, with registered individuals left out.

The discrepancy in the total count of ballots also raised eyebrows, as ABLP agents initially indicated 456 ballots, a number later revised to 359 votes after counting.

Burton’s agent, however, disputed this count, stating that her tally was 356 votes, highlighting a discrepancy between the number of votes and the total individuals claimed to have voted.

Furthermore, Burton referenced the terms outlined in the candidates’ contracts, specifically paragraphs 5 and 6, which stipulate that if no candidate achieves a 50% threshold, the top two candidates proceed to a run-off.

He urged immediate action to address these concerns and requested the scheduling of a run-off as per the contractual obligations.

Burton emphasized the importance of upholding transparency, fairness, and integrity within the party’s processes, expressing concern that failure to address these issues could undermine trust and confidence among constituents and compromise the party’s credibility.

The ABLP has yet to publicly respond to Burton’s call for a run-off or address the concerns raised regarding the primary process. The outcome of this dispute could have significant implications for the All-Saints Constituency.

  1. I support you wholeheartedly. Let’s get some action. Lamin had more airtime on the radio because of his affiliation with Pointe FM. I don’t think the PM should put his thumb on the scale here. Neither Chet who brought him into the Party. I don’t back the PM on this one. We need a run off. Or we need a poll done.

    • @ From the Sideline: Democracy & Transparency seem to be taken over by Nepotism.

Now, If there was an agreement with the candidates prior to the election that there will be a run-off if either candidate do not meet a condition which non did, why has a winner being declared?

Is it because of the ‘ close affiliation ‘ of Lamin with the PM, and Donna who all of a sudden is very popular & displaying a loud voice in the public domain and Lamin’s association with Senator Colin & Pointe FM Radio….. ?

Let’s hope that hierarchy of ABLP will allow transparency & clean democracy prevail.

    • Welcome back @ From The Sideline – a decent ABLP adversary returns. I was getting bored.

      Nice! … 🤜🏽🤛🏽

  2. Democratic principles at its worse. A Primary where three candidates signed and agreed that the eventually winner of the primary should get at least 50 percent of the votes. No candidate got that yet the candidate who secured the highest votes was unilaterally announced as the winner. The signed contract was nullified just like that. Pure bogus primary! Transparency falling flat on its face.

    • I wholeheartedly disagree with your position. It could be interpreted as toeing the line no matter how immoral or what infractions may have been committed. Most have a problem with the twitwisting of the democratic process to ignore moral obligations. It is pretty clear that something is amiss when a former UPP candidate is the clear choice in an ABLP primary.

  3. Yesssss more dirty laundry being by these full of shit political parties. Yes Regis air out all of ALP dirty laundry got me popcorn 🍿 ready.

  4. So while Gaston and his poppets on the Browne & Browne show focus on upp candidates I.e Jamal Pringle and Richard Lewis candidacy, They own closet left wide open for all to see the infighting! Just another strategy to deflect….. smh

  5. This is typical of ALP; no decency, transparent, accountability nor integrity. It’s the same way they conduct our business. The Sideline is supportive of Regis’ call because Lammin is an UPP defector/ traitor who seems to have been given the push but he will have to be opposed to the entire UPP Party within the ALP; from Colin O’Neal through Driftwood because they are all behind Comrade Lammin. The Traitors are infiltrating the Cult. They are all nothing but a band of cheats.

    • @MAGA in Antigua. So are you saying the other two have to be absolute jokers so that one can get greater than or equal to 50%?? If that is the case. why have a primary?

  6. Regis ……we’ll said I agree with you 1000%

YOU ARE WELL EDUCATED AND ITS RIGHT THAT YOU GET A RUN OFF LAMIN SAT LIKE THE THRISTY MAN THAT HE IS FOR POWER

LAMIN a weary construction worker with NO VISION ARROGANT ASF AND A WOMAN BEATER SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO RUN ON ALP TICKET

IM GLAD YOU SAW ALL THE DISCREPANCY bcos YOU AINT NO FOOL OR A DUNCE

  7. Regis,
It’s time you see the ABLP leader for who he is. He cares nothing about truth, transparency, and integrity if it stands in his way of getting ahead financially.

ABLP is a party that doesn’t care about you or your morals. You are too much of a decent human to be aligned with this party. God is sending you clear signals. It’s time you leave them, even if your family members are long time supporters. There comes a time when each person will have to be true to his/her own conscience and moral values or sell his/her soul to the devil. Forge your own path and stand up for what is honorable and just.

Praying the best for you and your beautiful family!

  8. Whatever Regis gets, Regis deserves.
It’s beyond comprehension how young people who consider themselves smart or intelligent could associate themselves with them old renegades of the ABLP who do nothing but thief from Antiguans and Barbudans

  9. Regis Burton, well said.Do not back down.Stand up for what is your right. If there is a contract. And all were in agreement to said contract. Then there should not any manipulations of said contract by those in positions of leadership. At least you seems to have backbones.

  10. This i-not an ABLP issue for me. This is how political parties operate in this country. And especially when it comes to primary or leadership races. I remember the leadership race between Lester and St. Luce. The party was about to mash up. And then the leadership race between Lester and Gaston. Again the party was about to mash up. But strange enough the Labour Party always manage to put the interest of the party first. Daven Joseph wanted to run in the very same All Saints West and Gaston told him to step down. And Michael Browne went up and won the seat for Labour Party twice. But don’t fool yourself. UPP had thier share of confusion in the past as well. I remember when they had their convention and Harold was challenging Baldwin. Boy I never saw Baldwin so nasty. He put some words into Lovell. And why you think people like Tim Hector and Donald Halstead broke ranks with the party. Today there is not one original member of the then UPP running on the party ticket. All have left. Next election we will have a larger slate of new candidates running on the ABLP ticket as well. I hope Regis is steadfast and challenge the leadership that is trying suppress the outcome in their favor. Regis do not go anywhere. Stay and fight your battle. The UPP isn’t any better. Politics is a dirty game. get used to it.

    • @Less We Forget. If you find it so hard to stay on topic, why comment? This “both sides sh..t” is part of what is ruining us and only ABLP benefits from it. Criticize UPP if you must! It’s free speech but this constant broad brushing is dangerous.

Let me leave you with this quote. “It is kinda a no-brainer thing to say both sides have done it. But this doesn’t properly give us any idea of the severity and effects of the lies and actions, the frequency of the lies and actions, or the content of the lies and actions.”

      • @ Zackie

Great response to ”Less We Forget”. Once you hear them broad brushing they are defacto ABLP supporters but pretending to be neutral. Dem tink people stupid wid dem ploy.
        Bunch a idiots.

  11. Regis many thanks to you for sticking it out as I advised you because you did not allow your party’s play play politics to railroad you…I think you knew deep down what was about to happen and used your quick thinking and intellect to guide you as to the rules of engagement..Please know win or lose we are behind you as your leader continues to play politrics and disrespecting the youth in the process…continue to stay steadfast and show your colleagues that ONE NEVER WINS WHEN THEY PLAY DIRTY….GOODLUCK🫡🫡…
