Recent hotel robbery being kept hush-hush, leading Wehner to conclude that crime is being deliberately underreported

Reports of a robbery at a hotel on the eastern section of the island have surfaced, but the matter has not been made public by the Police, to date.

The official silence follows another incident at the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority, where four barrels were stolen from a locked container two weekends ago.

In that incident, masked men reportedly entered the compound, removed the barrels from the shipping container, and replaced the broken lock with a new one brought for that purpose.

These crimes have prompted REAL News Correspondent George Wehner to conclude that crime in Antigua and Barbuda is being under-reported by law enforcers.

He files this report about the alleged robbery.

Since the person of interest was taken into custody and then escaped – being at large for days now – no bulletin has been issued by the police, Wehner notes.

He is particularly perturbed by this situation, given the treatment meted out to him since his detention by the Police in 2016.

Wehner says that neither the Commissioner of Police, Atlee Rodney, nor the Minister of Public Safety, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, has come out to say anything on these recent incidents.

He is asking why the officials are keeping these incidents “hush- hush,” adding that the people of Antigua and Barbuda do not feel safe.

  1. Safe bring more people to spend .No where in the world do they REPORT all crimes , save the forest save paper lessen our footprint

    • @Looking…we know the drill, and the propaganda controlled and peddled by the Media(plural of their masters, The Medium). Hey…because it’s so, doesn’t mean that all of Us will stop #LOOKING👀, not like a peeping Tom, but like a buffer speaking the reality which we’re living!

  2. Why is anyone surprised that bad news with crime and the economy is being suppressed by the ABLP?

Whenever there’s a run up to an election truth is thrown straight out of the window.

However, it’s not just happening in Antigua. Look at what’s going on with the current elections in France, you would think that everything is going well with their economy as well; and NEVER forget that the UK government hid all the problems that would arise with leaving the European Union regarding BREXIT, in the run up to their own elections.

The UK is now experiencing a 54% rise in energy costs, food banks are now all over the country, the farming and fishing industries are virtually decimated, and on average there’s a 2-3 year wait for operations. UNACCEPTABLE!

BRITAIN IS IN A REAL MESS, WITH INFLATION CURRENTLY RAMPANT.

NEGATIVE news has always been curtailed by governments in run ups to elections – why is anyone surprised?

If the ABLP do retain power – we deserve everything that’s coming …

    • With the way that the WHOLE world is going as a result of COVID and the Ukraine/Russian war, please let us know what the UPP will do to make things better. Food prices have gone up worldwide. Fuel prices have gone up worldwide, yet you think that the UPP will magically make everything better for Antigua while the rest of the world spirals.

      • @ Not in a bubble, I for one would love to see a coalition with all 3 main parties. This would hold all of them to account, and also put the country first.

I’ll admit that I originally supported the ABLP, when they came back into office, however the Prime Minister’s lies and backtracking affected my small business.

I had to suspend my business, but I was lucky, many small businesses went bust, and others are now selling up.

AND WHEN SMALL BUSINESSES SELL UP THE ELITES, POLITICIANS AND SUPER RICH JUST COME ALONG AND CLEAN UP, AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN …

      • The UPP is not in power.

You want the UPP to give them ideas so they can COG as usual and take credit? No way, never I say, no way. ABLP dig themselves in a hole so they need to pull themselves out.

  3. Stop saying ” STOLEN ” they werent the person knew the exact container the exact barrels to take…CLEARLY SMADY ALREADY KNEW THIS WHETHER IT WAS A PORT EMPLOYEE OR THE OWNER OF THE CONTAINER…….did the owner of the said container made a report or the camersas or inside persons start talking……I SINCERELY HOPE NO PORT EMPLOYEE IS MURDERED ….

  4. There appears to be a high level of corruption at the Port Authority. Employees are being murdered and we hear
people are entering the port and removing barrels from a
locked container and replacing the lock. It would have to be someone who knew the container number, that is an inside job. Is the Red Shirt head of Port Authority concerned, or is she like her leader who did nothing when his signature was forged.
Are these people concerned about the contents of the barrels. Could it be drugs, weapons, or worst yet some pathogen to spread in Antigua.

    • The Port Authority would know the owner of the missing barrels from the shipping documents.
