Rape in Antigua: Day 19

17

Today marks 19 days since Antigua News Room (ANR) first reported that a young woman had filed a report with the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, accusing a member of the Gaston Browne Cabinet of raping her.

Today, 19 days later, the country remains in the dark about whether the Cabinet Minister has been questioned by police or if he is still a member of the Cabinet.

  1. This in unacceptable!
Women and girls should also be protected from perpetrators who hold positions of power, and this does not seem to be the case in Antigua.

  2. MY PEOPLE THE FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS IS THE WAY YOUR POLITICAL SYSTEM IS SETUP . NO GOVERNMENT MINISTER SHOULD BE THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF A COUNTRY PERIOD . YOU’RE NOW ASKING THE SAME ATTORNEY GENERAL TO STRONGLY GO AFTER AND INVISTIGATE A MEMBER OF HIS OWN PARTY WHO HE WORKS WITH ON A DAILY/WEEKLY BASIS. THIS IS WHY IN THE U.S. THE STATE PROSECUTOR HAS SUCH A LOW CONVICTION RATE WITH MURDER AGAINST UNARMED BLACKS BECAUSE HE WORKS DAILY WITH THE POLICE ON PETTY AND OTHER CRIMES. GOOGLE IT DON’T JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT . CANDIDATES WITH THE EXPERIENCE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE LAW SHOULD BE VOTED ON SEPARATELY DURING AN ELECTION.

  3. Something’s systematically wrong with my Country if the age of consent is 16 . What age comes before 16 ? it’s 15 right. At age 16 she is still a child . I’ve heard of a adult male involved with a 16 year and she has openly talked about it . Don’t know her from Adam but was shown the young .Grown men like me remember your daughter the next time some of you penetrating a 16 year 0ld. Sickening !

  4. DNA need to pivot to the main opposition role by doing the necessary things to effect favorable results in selected breaches that has the preponderance of winability.

UPP’s role is to cuss, grumble, find fault an move on after 9 days of wind wasting.

    • Do you need a politician to tell you that an accusation of rape should be taken seriously, regardless of who is the alleged perpetrator? You are simply shirking your responsibility as a citizen to stand up to and call out injustice when it occurs. Just another pathetic excuse for remaining silent. People like you sickens me.

      • @Chups and Dunlop
        Thanks for your feedback.
What can you do about the situation? What are you doing about it? Just talk, right?
It is action that get things done not talk.

The Westminster system is set up a particular way for a reason please do some formal studies and inform yourselves.

NGOs and Opposition has a major role to play in governance.

By now a credible opposition should have already petitioned the court for a writ of mandamus to cause the Commissioner of Police to do his duty.

Chups and Dunlop it is that easy. How come I know this I am not a lawyer…….

  5. Since the misleaders refuse to anything about it other sweep it under the rug; just like in Nigel Christian’s case including the well known MP Elmo who has been getting away with predatory sexual behaviour, WE THE PEOPLE HAVE TO STAND UP TO ALL THE CORRUPT GOVT MEMBERS.

Corruption in the govt has been getting worse and worse and only gaining momentum. The govt has been taking advantage of we the people and making decisions and deals that are not in the interest of WE THE PEOPLE. At the end of the day, our country and we the people pay the price for the poor decisions of the inept corrupt members of govt.

All those who vote because they accepted blatant bribes from their party representatives are just as guilty for bringing down our country. Some voters may even have no conscience and even if their family member(s) was sexually molested or raped, they would still turn a blind eye and forget about it; maybe even take hush hush money.

Our country’s well being depends on WE THE PEOPLE and NOT the govt. The govt represents WE THE PEOPLE. If WE THE PEOPLE don’t care about our country, then the govt won’t care about our country. And that today, is very evident and sad.

    • Well said: Antigua Citizen.
      Power to the people.
      Do your job police commish.
      Let due process reigns

  6. Judgment is going to take place, a radical change is going to happen soon, too long have things went under carpet no answers.
Over 3 millions fraud, ( forge signature)
    Money witheld from customs auction
Passport scandal with a police officer and who knows (who else is involve that the case has not called protecting that officer)
A death of a customs officer
Woman(tourist) brought gun in luggage at airport(special dispensation she was released)
An accused rape case involving a minister
Too much reluctance to act is just as guilty as committing the act. Cabinet control the police force, special dispensation and all nonsense.
Alot of small matters are call urgently but what about those cases. Time will come, things will be expose ,it is just a matter of time, If things like this continues the days of the western is going to return and that will be the new normalcy , because they created it to be that way by sweeping things under the carpet for too long and vacuuming it afterwards.

  7. EDITOR Antigua News Room:Thank you for revisiting this serious accusation.

Do you folks really expected anything differently. It is a Minister in Cabinet. To be accused of Rape is a very, very, serious matter. It cannot be overlooked. Regardless of the status of the accused. I hope this matter is not bought off for $$$.It should run its course. Let the chips fall where ever.

  8. The police force in antigua is headed by a politician who is of the same political party as the accuse. Neither can act without the affirmation of the PM. The police are going to drag their feet bc this is the type of behavior that many of them on the force are engaged in too often.
The so called political leaders and law enforcement think women exist for one sole purpose.
To them, what’s the big deal.
Here a politician ftom the ruling political party is allegedly nvolved so there won’t be a case.

  9. Editor, please continue to review this case over and over again until the accused is placed in police custody. We cannot give up on this one. That snake, whoever he might be, is going down. The courts will do the right thing. Politicians step aside. Police do your work.

  10. @ FROM THE SIDELINE.
    Say something naah!
    This is about your ALP.
Defend your prime minister and cabinet ministers. Point back your finger at UPP and observer. Stay on payroll bwoy.
