LOOP: Antigua and Barbuda is continuing to show love to Rai Benjamin as he was appointed as a cultural/sporting Ambassador by Prime Minister Gaston Browne.
The decision was taken following Wednesday’s meeting of the cabinet where Benjamin was invited by Browne, who congratulated him on the silver medals he won at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan and the recent World Athletics Championships in the USA.
A note from the cabinet said Benjamin, who is the son of Antigua and Barbuda and West Indies cricket star Winston Benjamin, “was socialized and schooled in Antigua; he is a graduate of the Antigua Grammar School before migrating to the USA.”
The 25-year-old represented Antigua and Barbuda on the international stage in the 400-metre flat and hurdles before he switched his allegiance to USA in 2019.
The cabinet said Benjamin is happy “to be a strong advocate for other Antigua and Barbuda athletes seeking opportunities abroad”.
He presented the government with a list of issues that needs to be fixed for local athletes to rise to the top. These include additional coaches, training facilities/ equipment and meets with international and regional athletes.
One of Benjamin’s coaches was also present at the meeting and encouraged Antigua and Barbuda to implement more grassroots programs to identify talented youths.
The Sports Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs are scheduled to meet with local coaches to develop a program to identify talent at an early age and to upgrade our talent.
