Question of the Day: What should the primary role of an elected representative be: a problem-solving sponsor for their constituents or an advocate for policies that address broader systemic issues?

Rob the people.
To serve at lease 2 terms in parliament and at least 1 year in the senate to get a big fat pension. Meanwhile the average man or woman who put them there have to work till 65 before them get one pension no wonder both sides (ALP and UPP) so desperate to win them seat. Easy pension.
The oath of office for a member of Parliament in Antigua and Barbuda is a pledge to uphold the law and the Constitution, and to perform one’s duties impartially.
What the oath says
“I, ___________, do swear (or solemnly affirm) that I will honor, uphold and preserve the Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda and the law”
“I will conscientiously, impartially and to the best of my ability discharge my duties as and do right to all manner of people without fear or favor, affection or ill-will”

People must learn, understand and comprehend what the meaning of taking an Oath is. Just like when you get married you take an oath. Yet many break this oath time and time again. It really doesn’t mean anything to them. The reason for this is that they do not know or understand what taking an oath really is. It start when we make a promise and cannot keep our promises. We make them to our children and they then try to keep us to our promises and we brush it off. Not realizing that is the beginning of our men/women not understanding how serious taking an oath is. When you are in court and take an oath and swear to tell the truth, when you are caught lying you will be charge with purgery. That is how serious taking an oath is. Therefore when you ask what is the true role of our elected representatives, it is the oath you must look at. Nothing else. The rest are promises they made. And not all promises they can keep. But oaths they must keep. Or resign.
The comments are true to how most people in Antigua view politicians. Take the comment about pensions, for example-the same politicians just added on years before people can become pensionable, did they add an extra term to themselves. What we heard recently is that the cabinet secretly gave themselves an increase. They did not even include the opposition until they found out about it. They are allowed 1 acre of prime lands for peanuts. They are awarded government contracts- example by the PM himself with his equipment, including the excavator that has been making millions dredging the harbor. They are all self enriching themselves off the tax payers backs . The recently defected MP for All Saints West is now the contractor that is cutting the side of the road in his constituency. He made statements about the corruption in ABLP and right now he is looking to fill his pockets.
So the civil servants runs the miniseries, do all the hard work and don’t get to enjoy a healthy pension. People must go on pension when they are close to die from how the PM is speaking. Then when you become pensionable it takes months, sometimes years before you get a red cent. The politicians get theirs immediately as they are due.
They don’t pay utility bills and get enough allowance to include traveling , Vechicles , fuel and Per-diem. In the recent budget it came out that it took thousands to feed them in one cabinet session.
So the role of the representatives are to rob the people and State of Antigua blind .
By the was they don’t pledge any Oath of Allegiance to Antigua and its people but to the king , his heirs ( children) and successors ( grandchildren). They are not obligated to Antigua in no way.
