Question of the Day:
Should the Speaker of the House in Antigua and Barbuda be chosen from outside the pool of politicians to ensure impartiality and independence, or is it reasonable to expect sitting MPs to remain unbiased in the role?

If the Speaker continues to be a political figure, it undermines the entire democratic process. Parliament needs a referee, not a player in the game!
Having the Speaker chosen by both the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader could be a step in the right direction, but would they ever agree on a truly neutral candidate?
Politicians already have too much influence over appointments. The Speaker should be nominated by the Governor General to keep it truly apolitical!
Isn’t the problem deeper than just who the Speaker is? Maybe we should focus on improving political culture in Antigua and Barbuda as a whole.
The Speaker’s independence shouldn’t just be implied by convention – it needs to be explicitly written into the Constitution with clear rules to enforce it.
It’s not a democratic process if politicians continue to have dominion over every single aspect of the country, as long as they continue on the path they have been on we will never be any better. Patiently waiting on the question of whether they should have stocks and ownership in all them hotels constantly being built
the DULY ELECTED LEADER OF UPP/LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION needs to stay away from Richard Lewis! do not trust richard under any circumstances!!! He is self-seeking, self-serving, SLY and underhand. richard posed for photo with the Hon. Pringle after the convention, but now we see it was FAKE!!! every lving day tha God wake us up, richard tries to OVERSHADOW MR. PRINGLE!! He just cannot accept that HE LOST TO PRINGLE!

2. The Chairman made it clear that she wants Richard Lewis out of the party.
3. She revealed that a recent poll showed Richard Lewis trailing Michael Joseph in the St. John’s Rural West constituency.
4. The Chairman expressed her lack of trust in Richard Lewis, stating that he can no longer win his seat and should step aside.
We could all say the same when Giselle was appointed. We can’t be selective when it suits us. The shoe just NEVER feels right when it’s on the orher foot does it?
The Government chosen by the people for the people gets to choose the Speaker of the House of Representatives. When in the history of the Westminster System of government do you hear the Opposition gets to make an input on that choice. You might not like the person in the position, but here is the thing: the Soeaker follows the rules put in place by the Parliament. They have procedures to check the Speaker and other MPs. I do not get it: as soon as you do not like a choice you want to change the rules. Who do you expect to spearhead the rules change?
The way the Speaker is chosen in our democracy is to ensure a certain result. It is more of a political gamesmanship than trying to get bipartisanship and consensus in the house. Politics has a hand in everything in Antigua and Barbuda.
the DOMINICAN queen contestant had a hand in your finances?? Was it a gamesmanship to show her off not realizing you were not on her level?
@Pringle stay far away from DANGEROUS. Don’t you ever get tired? Everyone is on to you so at this point, you are just wasting time.
Now that’s a good apolitical or independent step in the right direction for more transparency and accountability in Parliament House.
This would be much welcomed, but we all know that Gaston and his cohorts will veto any such move.
Look at how the Prime Minister reacted when the Honourable Richard Lewis pursued a Freedom of Information Act request, and Gaston still ducking and diving.
I dream that one day Antigua & Barbuda will have a world respected leader like the Honourable Mia Mottley of Barbados 🇧🇧
MAY THE LORD MAKE THIS POSSIBLE 🙏🏽
In my opinion,The Speaker of the House should be an elected Member of Parliament.He/She should be voted on by the majority party Members of Parliament as Speaker of the House.AT least the Public would know where that person stands. There would be no surprises.
