Public Servants will be able to remain in their jobs a little longer following an announcement by Prime Minister Gaston Browne today of an increase in the retirement age.

He told the 2020 Budget Speech that come May 1, 2020, the new retirement age will be 65-years-old.

The current retirement age is 60-years-old.

Browne told a near three-hour long speech, that the increase will fall in line with the pensionable age for social security which was recently increased to 65.

“We have addressed the misalignment between the government retirement age and the Social Security pension age,” Browne said today.

He said although effective May 1st 2020, the retirement age for public servants will be 65 years, “but public servants will have the option for early retirement between the ages of 55 and 60.”

Browne added that “where the age of a public servant corresponds with the social security pension age, the public servant will be able to retire with full benefits.”

He was outlining measures in the budget to improve conditions for public servants.

  1. I believe this age increase should be adjusted to the nature of the job the person is doing. Imagine a Police Officer at the age of 64 running down a youngster who will out run who? Certainly not the police. I cannot not even imagine a Firefighter at that same age saying they fighting fire 🤔. Some professions won’t be able to produce efficient work at those age henceforth, I believe some adjustments should me made especially with the type of work the person is doing.

    • THE TIME BEGGARS – OVER EXTENDED TENURE

      None may ignore one of the ‘…Founding Constitutional Principles.’
      There is a particular ‘Principle’ that states;

      ‘…There should be opportunity for advancement on the basis of;

      (a) Recognition of merit;

      (b) …Ability; and

      (c) …Integrity.’

      It is to the knowledge that these are often ignored in accommodating ‘…cronyism or nepotism.’

      These were often seen when people were placed in positions far beyond their ‘…professional competencies,’ and were ‘…found wanting of competence, ability and integrity.’

      This new age for ‘…Mandatory Retirement,’ may be ideal for ‘…The Time Beggars.’

      People who believe that they should work until they ‘…Kick out.’

      Not to be likened to the experiences of the ‘…former Agriculture Minister.’

      Likened to the ‘…Sped Arrow,’ it never returns after it had left the ‘Bow.’

      Guided by this axiom, always believe that when employees come to the end of their tenure, they should ‘…demit office peacefully and gracefully.’

      There can be no empathy for those who appeared to have wasted their ‘…youthfulness and usefulness,’ be it in the ‘…Police Service or Public Service.’ No Sah.

      For that which was ‘…not achieved youthfully,’ can never ever be achieved at the ‘…Pensionable Age.’

      Much better to take the ‘…accrued Retirement Benefits’ and go, than to ‘…kick out without it.’

      • DADLI: EMPOWERMENT v RETENTION OF RETIREES

        There are two contrasting things here;

        (i) …Empowerment of the Young; and

        (ii) …Retention of Retirees.’

        These may be likened to ‘…Preaching and Practicing.’

        Never the same thing.

        This was viewed from the position of ‘…Empowerment.’

        They shall not preach about ‘…Empowerment of the Young,’ and still ‘…Retaining Retirees.’

        They shall ‘…Practice’ what they ‘…Preach.’

    • The real reality is that older police officers and older firefighters are supervisors and managers. Therefore, they don’t go chasing robbers or fighting fires, they do the work that senior-level people do in those organizations. Therefore, they can work till 65, maybe even 70. Giving them early retirement benefits for the rest of their life is a waste of tax payer money!

      • I disagree they have persons who are within the force who are in their 50s and near 60s that are still constables and corporals who are actually in the field.

  2. This is in line with most developed countries and is to be c ommended. People living much longer now than before time.

  3. Simple fact: human beings are living longer and governments around the world don’t have enough money to support everybody retiring and living another 30 years. The math just doesn’t work.

    The retirement age (the age at which you can start collecting pension) should have been raised long ago. Actually the retirement age should have been lifted to 67, or just 65. This situation is going to create even bigger holes in our budget over the coming decade.

  4. i am in total agreement with ‘Reality’. Police job and Fire fighting job (now a days) are stressful jobs and when you join the organization young and in good health, the scope of the job pulls you down. Some can’t and some manage to reach sixty, with five more years more officers will die in office and at tge same time the longer the senior ones stay the longer the younger ones who work, will move up. I believe that Govt is short of money to pay for pension and gratuity, that is the reason for the age increase. THIS FOR POLICE AND FIRE NEEDS TO GO BACK TO PACK.

    • Thank you so much wicked. Not everyone manages to reach senior positions in the fire department or the police force… they only reach ages closer to retirement henceforth I believe they should look in that…

  5. So when these old folks stay soo long in the service, when will young people be able to be employed or matter of fact move up the ranks in the Public Service?

    Why should people suffer fir those previous sticky-fingers politicians and top officials who have long robbed the medical benefits and social security scheme, only now to raise the pension age for poor people to pay it back?

    When my ass reach sixty a home me wan go fu relax myself and enjoy my labour with not having to wake up early to meet no body’s hour but mine.

    The option should have been made to have persons decide whether to stay on that long to age 65 without loosing full benefits.

    Why should many of us suffer for those power hungry public servants who cannot rest because they waste their young years squandering their monies and now having to play catch up.

    Stupidness.
