Antiguan National Footballer Jernya Oscar, 23, Among Three Killed in Florida Crash

Jernya Oscar, a 23-year-old Antiguan and former national footballer, was among three people killed in a road accident on Interstate 95 in Florida, USA.

The crash occurred on Sunday, 16 December, near Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Mr Oscar and two others were standing beside their vehicles, exchanging information following a minor collision, when they were struck by another car. All three were taken to hospital but later died from their injuries.

Mr Oscar had recently graduated from Florida International University and had begun a promising career, securing roles at Grant Thornton and later as a manager at Amazon.

His uncle, MP Anthony Smith, described him as “a humble young man” and expressed the family’s profound grief.

“It’s been a tough week for me and my family,” Mr Smith said, as he prepared to travel to the US to assist in bringing Mr Oscar’s body and his mother back to Antigua.

Mr Oscar, who had represented Antigua and Barbuda in football, was remembered as a talented and dedicated young man with a bright future. Tributes have poured in from family, friends, and the Antiguan community.

Authorities in Florida are investigating the crash.
