Pringle Promises Economic Relief from Soaring Electricity Bills

During a political meeting Thursday night’s, UPP leader Jamale Pringle took aim at the soaring electricity bills faced by citizens, accusing the government of financial mismanagement and failing to provide stable, affordable energy. Pringle criticized the Labour Party for implementing a 40-day billing cycle, which he described as a “financial gimmick” that has unfairly burdened citizens.

“Our electricity bills are through the roof, yet power outages are a regular occurrence,” Pringle said. “This government has raised your electricity bills by extending the billing cycle, not because of a glitch, but as a deliberate move to raise more money to cover their financial mismanagement.”

Pringle also pointed to the government’s failure to fully implement renewable energy solutions. “We have two solar farms in Antigua and Barbuda, yet we’re still waiting on the batteries that would allow us to fully benefit from solar energy. The people of this country paid for those batteries in full, but where are they?” he asked.

He promised that a UPP government would prioritize renewable energy and make it more affordable for citizens. “With the right investment, Antigua and Barbuda could rely on solar energy for most of its power. We could reduce the fuel variation charge and lower the cost of electricity for everyone. This is what responsible governance looks like.”

  1. Once again the Honourable Jamale Pringle is bringing to the forefront the high cost of living crisis with the exorbitant and extortionate electricity prices.

Time and time again Browne is showing the hardworking Antiguan citizens that he will not curtail these rising price gouges, despite placing one of his “hostages to fortune” in a high ranking position at APUA.

Just another 28 problematic ABLP issues to pursue Mr Pringle … you might have to extend our rallies for a further month or so to cover all of these ABLP broken promises.

UPP sorting the wheat from the chaff and “Stronger Than Ever” ✊🏾

  2. People are sick and tired of this shameless kind of politics.

Antigua has some of the lowest electricity bills in the region despite the rise in fuel prices caused by the ongoing Ukraine war and other external causes.

The government has kept the price steady instead of allowing fuel variation to take bills sky high like in other islands. What exactly would the UPP do in this situation and how would you pay for it? And when electricity rates are reduced when global fuel prices decline, will you give the current Government actual credit or just make more unrealistic promises?

I think it was Harold who said that being in opposition is a batsmans paradise. Even so let’s not insult people’s intelligence.

The matter of the solar batteries is still in court. In other words the Government is seeking full delivery on the project as promised in the contract.

Plus what studies has the UPP done to prove that the solar power could be generated more affordably than LNG. The fact is it currently cannot be generated more cheaply, not for many more years when solar technology becomes more efficient at lower cost.

The bringing in of the new LNG plant was because it was a more affordable source and the LNG production further enabled the Govt to keep our electricity lower than other islands, so please be more specific in your criticisms and promises of what you claim you can do in Government.

  3. Just like you @ Tammy L, I can afford to pay my electricity bills, but there are a lot of Antiguans who just cannot.

All the Honourable Jamale Pringle is trying to highlight, is that current electricity prices is way way above current inflationary figures; and wages are not in line with this hike.

I also recall that the Prime Minister Browne promised in his manifesto to keep energy pricess “affordable and stable”.

What happened to that assurance and undertaking?

Surely he must be held to account if he fails to hold prices on or below inflation figures

  4. The people need a relief from you and MAN COW!! The CHAOS DEMON running everybody

  5. In all fairness, ppl use too much electricity. A significant portion of electricity is wasted. Ppl do not understand that if you leave phone chargers plugged in then electricity is being consumed. Ppl don’t understand the amount of power it takes to run air conditioning units. Ppl don’t value electricity. They think it just happens and should be for free. Just like water, electricity is not unlimited and has to be paid for. Unfortunately, A&B does not have power over the price of fuel that powers electricity. Also, solar power solutions are still costly that the fuel option is the best especially when having to consume a certain amount of electricity.

  6. Which countries in the region are you comparing electricity price rates to A&B? From my knowledge, A&B and St.Kitts Nevis has the highest rates of electricity in the OECS and CARICOM.
