Jamal Pringle, newly elected leader of the United Progressive Party, described his victory as unsurprising.
He secured 237 votes in a closely contested election against MP Richard Lewis, who received 173 votes.
Despite some colleagues not supporting his candidacy, Pringle opted not to campaign aggressively, prioritizing the party’s integrity.
He succeeded Harold Lovell, who retired last year, and his election followed much anticipation, especially given leaked support for Lewis from some opposition MPs.
Other key positions within the party, such as chair, deputy chair, general secretary, and various officer roles, were also filled through elections.

Want to know why it was unsurprising to you, Mr Pringle? Ask Gisele, Chaku, Whenner and Jason. They will tell you what they did to make it unsurprising for Pringle. All the lawlessness, all the bribery, all the intimidation. Even on the election floor, Chaku had to be warned over and over to stop campaigning. He is supposed to be a UPP statesman. They forgot that the receiver of all that nastiness from them was also one of them.
They make rules they call code of conduct and they break them as fast as they make them. Their celebration was not that of an in-house victory, but like a UPP vs ALP election. It was a shameful display, especially watching Wehner stripping off his shirt and running up and down in front of the delegates shouting ‘tek dat inna aryuh nennen”. Or Wehner after the convention driving through Richard Lewis’s constituency and shouting “‘tek dat inna aryuh nennen”.
Now after they did their best to demolish the other candidate, they are asking for unity? They are saying to him wipe all that from your mind and come do Pringle’s work in the party, because we know he can’t, but you can?
No, Pringle. Not surprising for you, but surprising behavior for those who expect better from UPP. That is straight Labour behavior. Sungu looking no better than Lungu.
UPP is now in reverse . Pringle knows he doesn’t has the intellectual ability to lead the party nor country . He is been driven by self interest people in the UPP executive that acts as his remote control. The ABLP is in celebratory mood all over Antigua. To be always reading from scripted notes prepared by your remote will not work . You might be sheltered in Antigua ,but not on an international scale with well trained journalist . If you have the interest of Antigua and Barbuda,plus the UPP party ,be a man and step aside so we can have proper representation home and abroad. In life ,the truth is what matters.
