Prime Minister Gaston Browne indicated during Tuesday’s parliamentary session that the government might need to step in to expedite the reopening of the Cancer Centre Eastern Caribbean.
Browne explained that ongoing negotiations between the former owner, Dr. Conville Brown, and the new buyers, primarily over equipment, are causing delays.
He noted a meeting this week between the receiver and the owners’ attorney, expressing hope for a swift resolution.
If unresolved, Browne said the government might forcibly acquire the equipment to reopen the facility and restore cancer treatment services.
The center was sold for EC$13 million to a North American health entity, with Sir Dr. Joseph ‘Joey’ John involved in the purchase.
