Prime Minister Gaston Browne received the representative of Morocco, Ambassador Abderrahim Kadmiri, among a series of diplomatic appointments Monday.
Ambassador Kadmiri brought a message of sympathy and solidarity from King Mohammed VI regarding the passage of the recent storms, and the assurance that Morocco would do what it can to assist with relief and recovery.
Regarding recovery, Ambassador Kadmiri explained that, on the instructions of King Mohammed VI, the Government of Morocco had dispatched a C-130 cargo plane with relief supplies to the disaster area. This plane was off-loaded in St. Lucia and the relief supplies were shipped to Antigua, arriving within the past week. The Moroccan diplomat pointed out that he recently had a ceremonial hand-over session of relief supplies with the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS).
PM Browne asked that his special thanks and appreciation be conveyed to the King, and praised the quick response of Morocco to the disaster affecting Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and other countries in the northeastern Caribbean.
Browne also thanked Ambassador Kadmiri for his Government’s pledge of US$1 million towards recovery and reconstruction in Barbuda, and compared the response of Morocco to that of other countries which had not come forward. PM Browne noted that he found the relief effort in relation to Antigua and Barbuda to be largely a South-South affair.
Both men proceeded to discuss the proposal for the opening of an OECS joint diplomatic mission in Rabat, the capital of Morocco. The proposal was presented by PM Browne at the last OECS Authority meeting in June in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The ambassador stated that, in the view of the Government of Morocco, the opening of the embassy would be a key step in strengthening relations. He emphasized that Morocco was willing to provide logistical support to facilitate the opening of the mission.
Ambassador Kadmiri also spoke about the role of Morocco in the world, both diplomatically and economically, and mentioned the readmission of Morocco into the African Union (AU) after a period of thirty-two years. He recalled PM Browne’s visit to Marrakesh in Morocco in 2016 to attend the COP 22 climate change conference, and pointed out that now was a moment of truth for the international community to live up to the implementation requirements of the Marrakesh Agreement and the Paris Accord.
