The prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda concluded his week-long visit to China on Sunday. Gaston Browne visited multiple places in Shanghai from Friday to Sunday, following visits to Beijing and Hangzhou. CGTN’s Wu Bin followed his trip.

The Prime Minister and his delegation visited China’s economic center from Friday to Sunday.

They first arrived in the Pudong New Area and toured the Shanghai Tower, one of the city’s most iconic buildings.

Completed in 2016, it is now the world’s third-tallest building, standing at 632 meters in height.

“It’s a pleasure to visit the Shanghai Tower, and the light show was absolutely amazing.”

Medical cooperation is also Gaston Browne’s focus this time.

He visited Ruijin Hospital and one of the largest drug distributors in China.

Ruijin Hospital is one of the country’s best hospitals and leads the campaign of establishing metabolic management centers around the country to treat chronic diseases, especially diabetes.

As Antigua and Barbuda are also facing the challenge of an increasing diabetes problem, many people in the delegation showed interest in the center, especially a non-invasive glucose meter developed by the hospital.

At Shanghai Pharma Sine, Gaston Browne learned about the company’s history, major drug products, and visited the company’s drug production lines.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne also learned about the city’s scientific and technological breakthroughs, especially in artificial intelligence.

On Saturday morning, he visited the Zhangjiang Artificial Intelligence Island in Pudong, an area specialized in developing AI.

Established in 2019, it has already attracted over 20 companies that are strong in future industries.

Browne learned about the AI applications in different life scenarios, like transportation, education, medical care, industry, and entertainment.

The delegation also visited a place called G60 Sci-Tech Innovation Valley. G60 is a highway code that passes through the Yangtze River Delta.

By creating the valley, it is expected that efforts will be connected and united in the region to make scientific and technological breakthroughs.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne also visited BYD’s Shanghai factory.

The company is a new energy vehicle giant and just overtook Tesla to become the world’s largest NEV car company in 2023 with 3.02 million NEVs.

The prime minister then sat in an electric car of the company and had a test ride.

“It’s very nice.”

On Saturday afternoon, Browne also visited the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center and learned about the institution’s monitoring and warning systems.

It is expected to strengthen its efforts in gathering more data and developing its environmental warning system.

Before concluding his visit in Shanghai, he also visited Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, known as COMAC, China’s largest aircraft maker on Sunday morning.

Gaston Browne visited the production lines of the company’s key models and also step on C919, China’s first home-made passenger jet.

GASTON BROWNE Prime Minister, Antigua and Barbuda “It’s very impressive, spacious and well designed. So I’m looking forward to having few in the Caribbean at some point.”

WU BIN Shanghai “Prime Minister Gaston Browne said that the visits to various organizations in different locations aim to deepen cooperation at a micro level after the two sides have already established a firm and strong friendship. The visit is expected to attract more trade and investment opportunities between the two sides. Wu Bin, CGTN, Shanghai.”

  1. The opposition MUST now use the FOI – Freedom Of Information Act(s), the Governor General’s Office, the Office of the Ombudsman, and the Courts all the way to the Privy Council, to get to the bottom of all the recent MOU’s, and or other Contractual Agreements, signed with the People’s Republic of China and any other business entity in China(as a matter of fact, all such agreements must be dealt with in this manner), on behalf of the State of Antigua, Barbuda and REDONDA!

The opposition has enough attorneys, they have enough funding, so do what must be done, to bring some semblance, to the lack of communication on matters which will affect, the Nation for decades to come.

We were, and some still are #up_in_arms, about the Antigua Airways and the several hundred Africans who seemed like, they just wanted to use Antigua, as a stepping stone to reach North America; however, the VISA FREE MOU with the Chinese will be bringing thousands who’ll be staying.

The small enclaves which they use, construct temporarily, to house their workers on construction projects are a microcosm compared to anything, that will be considered, a Chinatown!

UPP, the Opposition and Asot Michael, MP please file as many cases, as it will take to get ALl OF THE INFORMATION REGARDING THE RECENT MOU’ SIGNED ON BEHALF OF ANTIGUA, BARBUDA & REDONDA WITH THE CHINESE.

Jamal Pringle, talk unparliament is cheap. Talk in the Courts where the money is controlled from.

    • I guess it would be ok if they went and signed these agreements with the West Governments who is fueling Israel genocidal act, by supplying them with the weapons to continue the genocide.

What positive programs have the IMF, World Bank and G7 put in place to assist the less develop countries?

Instead of saying China will confiscate our sea port and air port if we are unable to pay back the loans, why not be more positive and think the upgrade of these facilities will bring in more revenue to be able to pay off the loan?

The west is drastically loosing its geopolitical dominance in the world, the world financial capital is fast shifting from west to east, the western Governments knowing this, is trying to start world war 3 in Asia, because that is how they gained dominance after world war 2 with the Briton Wood agreement, and the petro dollar agreement in the 70s.

I am not a fan of either political parties in Antigua and Barbuda, however, I think this move by the ABLP is a good strategic move, and I endorse it.

      • @Geopolitics…

Regardless, of who the government is signing MOU’s and other Contractual Agreements with.

Let’s stay with the root causes which are plaguing and have plagued, our public sector for decades, and not the fluff of ventriloquists and con artists known as politicians.

        • That is problem with most of us, we know the root causes that has plagued and is plaguing our public sector for ages, but we are not willing to make a geopolitical shift, and hope by doing so things will change.

We want to stay with the same status quo and hope things will change, changes will not happen if we keep doing the same thing over and over again, we have to step out and make new connections.

This is how developing countries continue to develop their economy and people, for transparency hold whatever Government is in office feet to the fire to show the agreements made, and monitor the economy for improvement.

  2. UPP, more action and less talk. Time to make bold moves before this island becomes Little China in the Caribbean. You were elected to stand up for the People of Antigua who are being cheated out of their birth right. Antigua belongs to Antiguans. If the PM can do whatever, whenever he wants without going through the required procedures, we are doomed.

  3. Why action from UPP? What about US, the people? Six members of parliament can do so much, but what about 500 citizens binding together; what about a 1000, 2,000, 10,000? There is more power and weight in that folks. We want to sit on our a$$ and pass the buck, and when a protest is called we never show up but full a chat on mediums like this.
When they attempted to up the pension age in France, 10,000 strong took to the streets in protest. The thought was quickly withdrawn. In Peru, a politician did what Gaston Browne did(or claims he did) with Moderna and thousands took to the streets insisting that he resign. It happened in short order.
Here we expect politicians to do what we in numbers SHOULD be doing. We have ourselves to blame. Those who took bribes and trinkets put the dunce idiot back there to destroy this country. For that colossal error, patriots must pay.

    • Some people don’t picket but there are so many individual and collective ways to skin a cat, so relax.

  4. Can Gaston Browne sign MOU with China without consulting with the government or the cabinet? Is Antigua owned by Gaston so the people have no input? What does he know about aircrafts? You just look at a plane and say I should get it without consulting with people in the know? Gaston is like a child in a toy shop. Everything he sees he wants and he knows nothing about what he sees. China will be willing to sell him the planes at low interest rates because they know what they will do if there is default. Who else owns these planes?

  5. The citizens of Antigua are shareholders in their countries success and demise.

In whatever company, big or small, you ever seen a CEO negotiating terms of that company without consulting with it’s shareholders?

This has to be one of the most blatant sellout of a island I’ve ever seen.

I totally agree with @Watching and @Ras. The opposition must get to the bottom of these MOU’s, and we the people must stand up and protest this blatant sellout of our country.

    And@Geopolitacal.
You are as dumb as they come when it comes to your so-called geopolitics..they really fooled you didn’t they?

The big picture you are missing in your foolish argument, is that Antigua is a sovereign nation, and if we are a sovereign nation, then the sovereign people of this island must have a say in where its country is going.

Gatson Browne is not a monarchy, and therefore cannot dictate the affairs of this nation.

    You think like a fool.
