Prime Minister Gaston Browne Advocates Engagement with Haitian Gang Leader Barbecue for Peace, Criticizes US Arms Supply

In a recent statement regarding the situation in Haiti, Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda advocated for engaging with Haitian gang leaders, notably mentioning Barbecue, to bring about peace in the troubled nation.

Browne’s comments come amidst escalating violence and challenges in Haiti, prompting regional leaders to seek effective solutions.

Speaking on the matter, Prime Minister Browne emphasized the need for a strong multinational presence to address the pervasive gang activity in Haiti.

He stated, “I am of the view that even the gang leaders, I mean Barbecue, for example, should be engaged, not necessarily to institutionalize any form of criminality in the governance, but to understand how all these guns and things are getting into Haiti.”

Additionally, Browne expressed concerns about the United States’ arms supply to Haiti, questioning the role of the gun lobby in the US and its impact on the Caribbean region.

He criticized the influx of firearms from the US, stating, “Here in the Caribbean as well, I guarantee 90% of the guns that come are from the United States, and they do nothing about it.”

Browne’s remarks reflect a broader concern among regional leaders about the root causes of instability in Haiti and the need for coordinated efforts to address security challenges effectively.

  1. The longer that the Haitian situation is as it is, the more difficult it is for Caricom and in particular the neighbouring islands to Haiti, for example, Jamaica, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and even the Dominican Republic. Continued instability in Haiti is not good for the region. With Prime Minister Henry already exiled and the proposed governing council yet to be formulated and put in place, it is the gangs that are literally running Haiti and lead gangster and chief spokesman “Barbeque” welds plenty power. Haitians are a proud people in spite of their years of economic hardships. The Haitian people do not want Caricom to determine their leaders. They want to be the ones selecting their leaders.
For a sustained peace and stability, it is important to engage Barbecue and I fully agree with Prime Minister Browne. I am glad that PM Browne is bold enough to speak out publicly about this. I feel certain that soon other leaders would echo the same sentiments.

    • @Audley, I must commend you here, you went outside you normal thinking box.

The PM’s comments by not find favour by all but I believe he spoke from his heart this time without trying to be politically correct.

He went on to speak about Israel and Hamas and I think he is finally getting the picture there. People are now seeing who the real terrorist are in that war.

  2. Antigua had a fledgling gang “Red-Short Gang” which was absorbed into the Labour Party Government in a seamless manner. It is knowledge and experience which encourages communication with the Haitian gang leaders.

    • Barbecue is Pump @I don’t know my name. So Gaston would know how to negotiate with gang leaders.
Does Gaston know where the guns which are finding their way into the hands of gang members in Antigua coming from?

  3. It is ironic the crime has increased in this little island known to be Paradise and the PM is quiet but want to be heard internationally to sound relevant. You need to be silent also.

  4. I see Gaston trying to usurp left wing ideology to look like a martyr which you are not, in reference to usurping former barbudans slave lands to empower white monopoly capital domination, I have been saying that barbeque is not a gang oriented movement, but one who rise up against the status quo of white hegemony manipulation and puppet government that are functionary of white monopoly capital, so barbeque and all civic minded people should be leading the way forward on Haiti status rather than america pay millions to our corrupt leaders to rubber stamp a puppet regime, with barbeque and others at the forefront having an input, Haiti can have a renaissance, end white hegemony, note well none of the rich whites are affected, they live in the coastal area on the beach as Gaston did for the whites on Barbuda, I think if barbeque commit to land and resources redistribution and appropriation without compensation, Haitian will never no peace because the whites and mulatto hold all the lands and resources , poverty is hell and without lifting the people from that status nothing will change, democracy is an ideology of the Romans for elite domination, poor people can’t eat and spend that, to the poor it’s esoteric. In our lifetime may the black people of this world have a say over their resources. So Gaston is equivocal and paradoxical when it comes to Haiti and Barbuda lands and freedom to manage themselves.

    • Nothing but the truth, yes,I do hope that indigenous people overcome colonialism and all it’s effects on our minds

  5. Life is cyclic, as #history repeats itself.
So, the question begs; is #Barbecue being viewed by his fellow Haitians, as a reincarnation of Toussaint Louverture?

The Truth is stranger, than fiction!

  6. The breakdown of Democracy in Haiti started with the conditions the Gaston Browne fosters in Antigua
A currupt government, a currupt judiciary and the wealthy living a life of comfort.
The poor masses has one way out of their mystery, and that is to turn against the wealthy.
BBQ and others were finance by the wealthy to protect them.
Followings that model Gaston Browne handed over J’ouvert in Point to gangs to control the event as a solution to the growing gang problem.
