Prime Minister Browne Questions Ukraine’s NATO Bid in Light of History

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed skepticism over Ukraine’s decision to pursue NATO membership in the face of the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The Prime Minister, during a discussion with the newly appointed American ambassador for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, drew parallels between the current situation and the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s.

Prime Minister Browne highlighted that during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the United States took a firm stance against Russia, insisting that Russia should not be allowed to build or establish any bases near or below Cuba’s doorstep.

Drawing a historical comparison, Browne noted that the then U.S. Administration, led by President John F. Kennedy, made a resolute decision to prevent Russia from establishing a presence in Cuba.

“I think the United States was absolutely right,” Prime Minister Browne asserted, emphasizing the similarity between the historical situation and Russia’s current actions in Ukraine. He questioned whether Ukraine’s pursuit of NATO membership and the subsequent conflict were necessary, pointing out that Russia’s concerns about NATO encroachment echo the past American concerns about Soviet influence near its borders.

Expressing his viewpoint, Prime Minister Browne suggested that if he were the Ukrainian leader, he wouldn’t have subjected his people and country to the destruction caused by the ongoing conflict.

He opined that Ukraine might need to reconsider its NATO aspirations and questioned the reasonableness of Russia’s opposition to NATO presence near its borders, drawing parallels to the historical U.S. position during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Browne highlighted the deep historical ties between Russia and Ukraine, describing them as fundamentally one and the same in terms of history.

While acknowledging the concerns of neighboring European countries rushing to join NATO due to the conflict in Ukraine, the Prime Minister suggested that the situation could have been avoided.

Prime Minister Browne expressed his belief that Ukraine might eventually have to surrender, and in hindsight, reconsider its decision to join NATO.

He urged a reassessment of the current path and emphasized the importance of avoiding further destruction and conflict.

  1. Isn’t Hindsight a great thing Prime Minister? Why state the obvious, that many have known for sometime now?

    Where have you been? Gallivanting?

    • ,@Brix…. U know u fully agree with the pm .. what u afraid to admit u r inlove with his observations … I know u both are friends… How is your Sunday brix

    • Do so never like so. The United States did what it had to do to protect its “sphere of influence” and to this day the Cuban people have had to live with that terrible embargo. Today the Ukranian people have to endure the horrors of a full scale war because Russia does not want a US led Nato on its doorstep. The PM’s opinion is valid in my opinion.

  2. There is a fundamental difference between what transpired between the USA and Russia or the former Soviet Union as it was then and Russia and Ukraine today, it is this: Russia today under Vladimir Putin, has a grandiose vision of creating a greater Russia as it once was under Catherine the Great. Don’t think for one moment that subjugating Ukraine is the end of Putin’s ambitions, far from.it. The Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were under the boot of the old Soviet Union, never forget. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union those states joyfully broke from the yoke of their oppressor and this has not pleased Putin one bit. Russia is an aggressive state, read its history. Russia (Soviet Union) did not place nuclear weapons in Cuba for fun. NATO on the other hand is a defensive organization formed to protect its members from external aggression; it has never attacked any country, it does not invite any country to join it, you have to apply and if successful you are granted membership. Its mantra is, attack one and you attack all. This is anathema to Putin. All his talk about NATO approching Russia’s borders is pure frustration on his part.
His dream is to gobble up the countries on his borders and that is why so many have have rushed to join NATO. Russia is the largest country in the world and if Putin could also bring Europe under its oppressive heel, it would be a dream come true for Putin.Ukraine wants to be a free and Democratic country, not subservient to a dictatorship like Russia . That’s what it’s all about.

      • @Antiguanman8.
You should read some history before making such an idiotic comment. NATO was formed in 1949 (four years after WW2) to protect countries from aggression by other countries. It is a non aggressive alliance of member states and if any predator country attacks one of its members and that member feels under severe threat then that member can call on the others for help, it’s as simple as that. Say how many countries Russia has attacked and say how many NATO have attacked and surprise yourself. Here’s a surprise for you: President Putin actually wanted to join NATO early in his career but did not want to go through the application process and wait in line with other counties that he considered did not matter. Think about it.

        • LMAO u sound crazy Putin in his early career was simply learning about his enemies he finessed former US presidents and officials when he knew all along he was not leaning towards the West.. Infact Boris Yeltsin himself before leaving office said to President Clinton be careful of Vladimir Putin he speaks of Democracy but he does not have it in his heart….If Ukraine joins Nato it gives the West an advantage..Why whould a country like Russia sit aside and allow that??

          • @This world is a messed up place.
Putin knows quite well that NATO has never, ever attacked any country unlike Russia. Read Russia’s modern history for a start. Let me repeat the obvious truth: Russia is a aggressive predatory state under Putin and even before him invaded other countries. NATO has put a brake on his ambitions and he is not best pleased. Once again I ask, which countries have NATO ever attacked? Name one. His eyes are set on Moldova but is too occupied with Ukraine which is much bigger fish. His latest adventure before Ukraine was in Georgia where gobbled up a part of that country. The Baltic States would become swallowed up once again without their membership of NATO. Get it?

  3. Slava ucrania! This is an existential battle for Ukraine to survive against Russia’s unprovoked aggression and genocidal war against Ukraine.
Ukraine will prevail defending its territorial integrity against that putler bully and war criminal. In Antigua you giving away lands freely to the conquistadors, same lands that our enslaved ancestors toiled with their sweat and blood, all that sacrifice to some of you idiots ,traitors and house slaves , miseducated fools with a few riches , seems all the pain and sacrifice was in vain. ?
Slava Ukraine! To hell with all the bullies and dictators .fight for something or die for nothing

  4. So why don’t you also do the smart thing Mr PM, and surrender your foolish visions to own the Alpha Nero, why don’t you do that?

You know so much about other people’s battles, and don’t know how to conduct yours..

I think you should just keep quiet if you ask me, because nothing useful comes out your mouth that’s pertaining to the good of antigua.

Infact I just think you should just surrender your leadership before the next general election.

    Yep, that’s my honest opinion.

    • @Islanm26. Agree with your opinion 100 %. This guy seems to know everything except the right things to do to make St Kitts and others stop laughing at us.

  5. Mr PM, knowing that Putin is in the BRICS chair for 2024 you will have to do more than that for Putin to even look at Antigua and Barbuda membership into the BRICS Nations.

You will also have to give back the Alfo Nero to its rightful owner, if Ukraine President had signed the agreement with Russia to continue stay neutral between Russia and the EU, there would not have been a war between them both, and lost over 500.000 young men, and millions would not have flee Ukraine, these are the things mainstream media do not want people to know.

However, Zelensky listened to the West and went to war with Russia, the same way the PM listen to the west and confiscate the Alfa Nero and try to sell it.

  6. Are you in your right mind? When did Ukraine attack Russia? What the heck am I hearing? I thought all this time it was Russia after carrying out military exercises for weeks along the Ukrainian border and saying it would not attack Ukraine then attacked and invaded Ukraine under the guise of a carrying out a “Special Military Operation”. What a joke. Russia invaded Ukraine and thought Ukraine would fall under its oppressive heel.in three days. The rest is ongoing history.

    • Ukraine is the country that separates the border between Russia and the EU, for this reason there is a universal law that said Ukraine is to be neutral and not join neither Russia or the EU.

However, Zelensky the Ukraine President apply for NATO membership, Putin try negotiating with him to renew the neutral agreement policy with Ukraine, to prevent NATO from being on Russia door step.

However, the west encourage Zelensky not to sign the agreement with Russia, and promise to supply him with arms to fight Russia if Putin attack them, and he agreed, you must know these Governments are corrupt and do not give a hoot about their citizens, but their personnel gain.

That is how the US rake up trillions of dollars in dept, by selling weapons to other Nations to start a war, then they sell their dept to other countries in bonds, the American dept is almost 35’trillion$, so the dollar is loosing its value.

For this reason the BRICS Nations started trading amongst themselves using their member states currencies, the west realize they are loosing their world dominance to the east.

It seems like they are not going down without a fight, so we are on the brink of world war 3, if level heads do not prevail amongst all sides of these Governments.

Disclaimer: This is not about the people of all Nations, but the nations Governments.

  7. Russia and China two countries who believe in the Hammer and Sickle….Wanna know who is a very good friend to Antigua and Barbuda? Ohh u guessed right the answer is China. Who is friends with China? Ohh gold star for you!! Yes the answer is Russia…So with that being known, why would Gaston who loves the aid and support of the Hammer and Sickle people believe they would not win??

  8. On the reals though Russia is not gonna give up Ukraine..They should of stayed out and not try to join Nato…Them joining Nato is not good for Russia so why would Russia allow something that’s gonna aid their potential enemies to the west…..Someone in the above comments stated that The Bay Of Pigs (Cuban Missile Crisis of the 60s) is not the same as Ukraine joining wanting to join Nato….It is the same thing because Ukraine will become very important to to west if a war breaks out just like Cuba was very important to the Soviets with their ICBMs….

  9. @Geopolitical Issues.
Are we talking about NATO or
EU? They are separate entities, make your mind up. The Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania border Russia and are now members of NATO, food for thought. Finland to the north has applied to join the Alliance but its application is being held up by Hungary because of Viktor Orban’s closeness to Putn although there now seems to be movement on his part. Why the enthusiasm on these countries to join NATO? Explain . Note Putin hasn’t moved against these countries, might NATO be a hindrance to his expansionist ambitions? Definitely is the answer. Now you see why Putin wants Ukraine to have no truck with NATO as he wants it back under its oppressive and dictatorial heel. There you have it!
