Prime Minister Gaston Browne has praised the dedicated efforts of Antigua and Barbuda’s law enforcement agencies, crediting their strong response for a recent reduction in crime and violence.
Speaking during a parliamentary session, the Prime Minister acknowledged the initial spike in criminal activities but expressed satisfaction with the significant decrease in violent incidents over the past four weeks.
“We had an escalation in crime and violence, but evidently, there has been a reduction in the prevalence of crime and violence,” PM Browne said.
He attributed the progress to the heightened activities of law enforcement and a “very strong response by all stakeholders.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the unprecedented coordination between the executive, judiciary, and Parliament in addressing the issue, noting that the government’s approach to tackling crime has been comprehensive and multifaceted.
“This is perhaps the first time, too, that we have seen a high level of coordination and cooperation between all three branches of government,” he noted.
Law enforcement agencies have been credited for their swift and effective measures that have put criminals “on the return,” a significant change from the recent surge in violent incidents.
The government, working closely with law enforcement, has committed to taking the fight to criminals, reinforcing penalties, and expanding rehabilitation efforts.
