During the ABLP/AT&LU Labour Day Celebrations at the VC Bird Bust in St. John’s, Antigua, Prime Minister Gaston Browne delivered a fiery speech, leveling serious allegations against executive members of the Antigua Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU).
Browne accused these leaders of being financially influenced by hoteliers, which he claimed has led to compromises in representing the interests of hotel workers.
In his address, Browne stated, “The leadership of that Union [ABWU] has sold out to the hoteliers in this country,” implying a conflict of interest that has impacted the welfare of hotel employees.
He continued, emphasizing the dire situation faced by hotel workers: “Hoteliers cannot even earn a decent pay, they can’t even afford the car they got for the mortgage.”
The Prime Minister’s accusations didn’t stop there.

“They have no use for the people, all they do is to use workers for political gain,” Browne asserted, painting a picture of a union leadership more concerned with political maneuvering than with advocating for its members’ rights.
He called on the Antigua Trades and Labor Union (AT&LU) to take action, urging them to expand their base and prioritize the needs of hotel workers who have seen little improvement in their conditions over the years.
The implications of Browne’s accusations extend beyond mere rhetoric, signaling a potential turning point in the fight for fair labor practices in the country’s vital tourism sector.

This is so true 5% raise is nothing to help us meet our demands of the bank home bills and our taxes dishwasher(steward) only making 11.03 per hour for all the hard work to keep the guests happy this payment needs to increase
Gaston should be the last person to talk about hoteliers influencing Union executives, specially given that these exact allegations have been made against the executives of the ATLU. Additionally one could also speculate that similar relationships obtains with members of the Government, and the so-called foreign investors that appears to be nothing but pretenders.

Gaston, if you have evidence that Antigua Barbuda Workers Union is taking money on the side which would be bribes, what are you doing about it? Are you going to bring charges against the hotels and the union? You as the government allow the hotels to get rich off the workers’ backs and when Antiguans refuse to work for the paltry salaries and poor working conditions, you bring in non nationals to take the jobs. You are nothing but a lying hypocrite trying to blame others for what your government has created. Stop bringing in the poor non nationals and read the riot act to the hotels to pay better wages. Gaston take responsibility for the problem and stop trying to fool people. You should be ashamed. You care nothing about ordinary Antiguans.
