Prime Minister Announces Ambitious Plan to Plant 100,000 Trees Annually

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced a commitment to plant 100,000 trees annually across Antigua and Barbuda. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing the country’s climate resilience and promoting sustainability.

“We aim to enhance our climate resilience and improve our natural environment,” Browne stated, emphasizing the urgent need to address climate change and its impacts on the islands. The Prime Minister described the tree-planting initiative as a proactive measure that will not only beautify the landscape but also contribute significantly to ecological health.

Browne highlighted the vital role that trees play in combating climate change. “Trees absorb carbon dioxide, promote rainfall, and support biodiversity,” he remarked, underscoring how planting trees can help mitigate the effects of climate change and improve air quality. “This is not just about aesthetics; it’s about ensuring a sustainable future for our children,” he added.

The Prime Minister called on all citizens, community organizations, and local businesses to participate in this initiative. “Let us come together to beautify our country and combat climate change,” he urged, encouraging a collective effort to engage in planting activities. He emphasized the importance of instilling a sense of responsibility in communities to take care of their natural resources.

As part of the initiative, the government plans to collaborate with schools, non-governmental organizations, and environmental groups to organize tree-planting events throughout the year. Browne stated, “We must educate our youth about the importance of environmental stewardship, and what better way to do that than by involving them in this initiative?”

Community leaders have expressed support for the Prime Minister’s plan, viewing it as a crucial step towards environmental preservation and sustainability. Local environmental activists are optimistic that this initiative will foster a greater appreciation for the environment among residents and inspire long-term commitment to conservation efforts.

The commitment to plant 100,000 trees annually is seen as part of Antigua and Barbuda’s broader strategy to enhance its climate resilience amid increasing concerns about climate change and natural disasters. “By investing in our natural environment, we are investing in our future,” Browne concluded, signaling a commitment to making Antigua and Barbuda a model for environmental sustainability in the Caribbean.

As the government prepares to roll out this ambitious tree-planting program, it aims not only to improve the island’s ecological health but also to promote community engagement and education around environmental issues. The success of this initiative will depend on the collaboration of all stakeholders, but with collective effort, Antigua and Barbuda can take significant steps towards a greener and more sustainable future.

  1. I agree to this initiative. Trees also can block heavy wins during hurricanes, lessening the impact on homes.

However, there are a shortage of certain fruits trees that have been cut down for years with no replacement.

I want the best tasting fruit trees, dumz, plums (red and yellow), golden apple, mani-apple, there was this purplish fruit (was in jolly harbor and in roses at my uncles pig pen/farm), guavas, ginip/kinip, sea grapes, sweet tamarind, dates, citrus, coconut, and we should invest in plants too: okra, spinach, grapes, coco-plum, pumpkins, etcetera.

I am so happy hearing this idea, years ago I posted on another news platform about this. Some of the sweetest and more tastiest fruit trees in bolans cut down. How on earth would you cut down that dumz tree. It was so amazing. And right next to it, they cut down that sweet maniapple tree.

That dumz tree in between Bolans and Jennings that was so sweet, where is it? I also had some big dumz brought up for me, I am addicted to that. I would pay nearly anything for more. My mouth is actually watering/salivating writing this.

Please do plant the trees yearly. Please outlaw cutting down certain trees.

  2. Great initiative. Agree with “.t way of helping” fruit trees yes.
Antigua has undergone a natural reforestation over the past 40 years. We are greener today thanks to nature and less burning and land clearance. Within the National Park, clearing land requires A through and lengthy approval process.
We need to protect our larger trees such as Ainchient Tamarinds, Baobab, Bamboo stands, Flamboyant, Mango, Kapok, Mahogany, Yellow Poinciana, Sandbox. All variety of palm trees.
Hikers and Ramblers can help. Scatter seeds on your health. trips into to nature.

  3. …as, Lester Bird would say!
    …please, please! #Wheel_N_Cum_Again!
…’cause, at the end of the day!
…Mr. PM! Gaston! You’re sounding like a comedian,
…and pulling trinkets from a hat!
    …like Houdini the magician!
…because, you’re not dealing with [facts]
…therefore, as a matter of fact,
…one can state, it’s Managers like you
    ..,and, others too!
..,that, have Our Environment under attack!

Next up! Mr. PM there’s no need to become Mr. Environmentalist all of as sudden. Yet, it’s understandable, as to the sense of urgency; because, PLANTING TREES, as soon as possible – ASAP will meet one of the criteria’s to get GRANT FUNDING from the Globalist, Plutocrats, Oligarchs who have made TRILLIONS over centuries, as they systematically destroyed parts of the environment, so now, they’re returning a minuscule amount of their profits, to correct the WRONGS and DAMAGES which they have caused.
The trick now by Governments, such as those in the SIDS Block of Nations is to attached themselves, to either the #GLOBAL_WARMING or #CLIMATE_CHANGE Bandwagon, do their bidding, support their causes, and you’ll tap into their GRANT FUNDING.

Gaston Browne, PM, you are not an #ENVIRONMENTALIST, as is evident from the lack of proper oversights, as they pertain to LARGE SCALE Developments in the Nation. You are an OPPORTUNIST, and rightly so, for you are cloaked in the armour of Political Trickery & Gimmickry!

It’s not simply, about planting trees to save the environment, the ESSENCE of Nature’s Ether, through the uniqueness of its #FLORA_n_FAUNA and the symbiotic relationship which is shared.
Whenever, developers(private or public) disturbs any area for development, what is noticed and is the practice is to go in and bulldoze, then grade almost the entire area of the planned development without systematically, identifying, tagging then protect those trees(LARGE and SMALL) from wanton destruction. It’s not ONLY tall trees or medium trees in height which are important.
Many smaller trees and even grass with help to reduce soil erosion and provide a habitat for animals that burrow and live at the surface of the earth.

The next thing WATER which is also just as important to many species
of trees, as it’s to HUEmans and we are fully aware of this SHIT_U_ATION, the lack of potable water on the island. Therefore, it’s behooving that in the NEWLY CONSTRUCTED ROADWAYS which should tie into a proper drainage system which then collects the runoffs, to be treated and used in AGRICULTURE and maintaining the FLORA during droughts.

Yes! PM! We hear you! Mr. PM!
    But! Wheel_N_Cum Again!
    You’re no ENVIRONMENTALIST!
You’re a CAPITALIST overseeing for the New GLOBALISTS!

  4. Are the owners of all those hundreds and thousands acres of land going to allow him to plant trees on their properties? Nothing is left after his grand giveaways so he needs to take his meds and stop looking for an excuse. It’s all about him in the news everyday; time is swiftly encroaching for the announcement of the next elections.
