NODS: A ceremony was held on Wednesday to signal the formal close of a project in the Golden Grove/Cooks Extension area aimed at reducing the level of flooding.

The project consisted of maintenance of the streamline and waterway, cleaning of existing ponds, construction of concrete barriers to control the overflow from ponds, construction of concrete box drains and dikes and elevation of the community road bridge.

Antigua and Barbuda was awarded $250,000 Canadian for the implementation of the project through the Caribbean Early Recovery Fund (CERF) established under the Targeted Support to CDEMA Project with the support of Global Affairs Canada.

This follows the November 2020 floods which affected at least 200 residents in the St John’s Rural West District, the area that had the most reported impact and property damage from the flood event.

Among the guests at the ceremony were Minister of State in the Ministry of Health Hon. Senator Michael Joseph, Member of Parliament for the area Hon. Richard Lewis, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Transformation Sarah Stuart, Permanent Assistant Secretary Lotty Thompson, Director of the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) Sherrod James and Project Coordinator with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Jason Francis.

Project Officer at NODS Jenniael Flermius, who coordinated the work over the past seven months, was grateful to all who supported the project.
