Polls open in Antigua and Barbuda

Residents of Antigua and Barbuda are headed to the polls today to elect a new government.

There are 53 candidates in the election race competing for 17 seats in the House of Representatives.

The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) currently holds 15 seats while the United Progressive Party (UPP) and Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) hold the remaining seats.

ABEC PRO Elisa Graham reports that 60,916 people are registered to vote in the general election.

In 2018, according to caribbeanelections.com, just 51,258 persons were registered to vote.

It means 9,658 additional people are able to vote in this election as compared to 2018.

Meantime,There’s been a whopping 51% increase in registered voters in St. Peter. ABEC says 4,609 people are registered to vote in St. Peter in this election.

According to caribbeanelections.com, just 3,041 people were registered to vote in 2018.

It means an additional 1,568 people are registered to vote in the hotly contested constituency this election.
