Police Issues Warning about Social Media Scams
The Police are once again warning the general public about the proliferation of scams being perpetrated via WhatsApp and other social media platforms.
This warning is intended to alert persons of these fraudulent activities and prevent persons from becoming victims.
In recent times, the Police has been alerted by members of the public that they are receiving requests for the collection of “winnings” and other monetary requests from persons or organizations that are located outside of Antigua and Barbuda.
These requests are designed to appear genuine but do have very questionable and in many cases fraudulent intentions.
Therefore, the Police are asking persons not to cooperate with these requests but instead, seek legal advice on these or similar matters.
Here are a few safety tips to prevent persons from becoming victims of a scam:
- If you receive a suspicious call or message, hang up the call and do not reply to the message.
- If you receive a phone call/message that sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Never send money or share your personal or financial information with any unknown person or organization.
- Contact your financial institution and the Police if you notice any suspicious activities on your accounts.
- Remember you are in control of what information you share about yourself online.
