Police Commissioner Rodney has called for changes to the Shanty Town setup at the East Bus Station Terminal, a popular Carnival spot, following a deadly shooting on Tuesday night that left one person dead and several injured.
“The time has come to review how we set up Shanty Town,” Rodney said, questioning the area’s current format despite its economic activity. He stressed that the police are committed to addressing violence and that these recommendations are part of a broader strategy to ensure public safety.
“We need to improve security, including booth layouts, lighting, and space for patrons,” he added.

A…the Ratta Hotel, Cyant Part, Wanna be Government Office Space, MUST be razed, and salvaged.
The area is replaced with reflecting pools which filters both Country ponds, by recycling and filtration of the ponds waters and reducing the runoffs to waste down Tanner Street.
The reflecting pool area is outlined with statues of SHEROES & HEROES, other cultural artifacts pertaining to Antigua, Barbuda & REDONDA!
B…the East Bus Station should be relocated to a Government Mega Complex, i.e. east to west along Elizabeth highway from American Road to Independence Ave, South to the Light House east to American Road! Use eminent domain where possible, and or incorporate private businesses like other medical facilities, churches, schools, and the Police and major Fire Departments)
C…from Obstinate to the Bowl in the Botanical Gardens lined with some permanent and some temporary vending sites.
The natural shape of the bowl in the botanical gardens, allows for a permanent Amphitheatre to house the Carnival Shows and other theatrical performances thoughout the year.
Temporary Sound Stages are erected at the Original site of Jam Pond to hold such things as #Sound_Clashes!
A series of rides, castles etc can be set up in the area to have a more FAMILY KIDZ ZONE which is opened during the day like a State Fair!

Oh pleaseeeee Mr Commissioner. Did not u or any of your officers attend the meetings for carnival…..or were u as usual outside of Antigua on one of your many trips. U spend more time on a plane that in your office u did know of Shanty Town or its reputation…..how long have u been in the police force again? Isn’t it about 40 years and only now u know Shanty Town needs a revamp. Dear Gaston browne and Cutie Benjamin please fire this guy and get someone who actually gives a damn about the police force and the wellbeing of the officers. No wonder why most of the officers don’t care about the job because the head honcho doesn’t care. All he cares about is how much time a year he can travel.
Why do we need a Shanty Town in the City of St Johns?
The commissioner comments are fair – not sure if he had proposed these measures before but they were not acted upon. But by limiting his proposal to just Shanty Town, it appears that he is really not taking a proactive approach.
The whole of St. John’s may need more lighting and security camera for carnival. The Trucks also should have security camera on them with a least 2 security personnel monitoring the crowd in the front and in the back.
