Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney provided details in a public statement, confirming that the suspects engaged officers in a gunfight, resulting in one suspect’s death and the hospitalization of the other two.

The incident began with a report of a robbery, prompting police to launch a coordinated response based on descriptions of the suspects and their vehicle.

Patrol teams quickly located the trio, leading to a confrontation during which the suspects opened fire on the police. Officers returned fire, critically wounding all three suspects.

“One succumbed to his injuries, one is in critical condition, and the other is stable,” Rodney reported. A firearm and a modified flare gun were recovered from the suspects’ vehicle.

The Commissioner emphasized that today’s events are part of a broader crackdown on a recent surge in armed robberies.

He noted that the police force had already intensified its efforts before the Carnival season by deploying specialized teams to combat this rising threat.

“We are committed to addressing the situation and ensuring the safety of the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda,” Rodney said. “This type of behavior is unacceptable, and we will not allow it to continue.”

Rodney urged parents and community leaders to play an active role in deterring young people from engaging in criminal activities. “Some of the individuals involved are extremely young, and we all have a responsibility to steer them away from a life of crime,” he added.

The Commissioner also expressed gratitude to the public for their continued support and information-sharing, which has been vital to police operations. He assured the public that law enforcement would maintain a heightened presence and continue to use all available resources to combat crime.

Rodney commended the bravery of his officers, acknowledging the increasing risks they face in their line of duty. “The police administration will continue to support every officer who puts their life on the line for the safety of our nation,” he stated.

The identities of the suspects have not yet been released, pending further investigation. The police continue to piece together details related to the robbery and subsequent events.

As the situation develops, the police promise to keep the public informed and reiterate their commitment to maintaining law and order in Antigua and Barbuda.

About time Rodney so please let the SSU do their jobs and provide them with everything they require to go after the rest of these nefarious individuals who have been robbing the hard working people of Antigua. 8. I’m in full support of the police abd the course of action they took. This needs become the common practice where these criminals are concerned. The citizens of the country deserve to feel safe in their homes and businesses. I hope that anyone else who thinks that robbing and threatening people’s lives is better than working for a living takes heed and looks for work to do. Kudos to the police for a job well done. Keep it up.

  10. The politicians are the real gangsters they are the ones the police should go after.

They have people tightening their belts and on top of that they are squeezing and milking every penny from financially challenged people.

Growth growth and more growth. Growth coming through their ears but the financially challenged people earning less and lesser each day because cost of living keeps increasing.

At present the value of a dollar to the financially challenged is 64 cents.
