Police arrest two Africans on suspicion of fraud

REAL NEWS: The Police have arrested two Africans on suspicion of fraudulent conversion after more than a dozen of their compatriots made a complaint against them.

A 39-year-old Nigerian man and his 32-year-old Cameroonian roommate were taken into custody on Thursday, February 16, following a search of their Crosbies residence.

Reports say that several police, including officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), went to the house at about 4 p.m. on the day in question and conducted a search of the property, which is occupied by six Africans, including the two suspects.

Reportedly, the four other occupants are all nationals of Cameroon.

According to further reports, during the search a black sling bag was found in the living room; it contained US currency, credit cards and other documents, as well as a laptop and charger belonging to the Cameroonian suspect.

Additionally, a brown envelope containing money and receipts – also belonging to him – was found in an upstairs bedroom, and another brown envelope containing documents belonging to the Nigerian suspect was found in another bedroom.

Both men were taken to the St. John’s Police Station along with the items found.

Reports say that, last week, the Police received a report from a number of the Africans stranded here, who alleged they had given money to another African – residing at Dickenson Bay – to obtain a charter flight back to Nigeria.

However, they claimed, they had not received their tickets or a refund of their money.

Reportedly, a total of 20 African nationals were allegedly scammed of over US$100,000.

Dozens of Africans have been gathering outside the St. John’s Police Station on a daily basis, attracting the attention of local residents.

It is not clear whether the crowd has to do with the alleged scam or with the visitors making applications for a police record, since, reportedly, many of them have been gaining employment here.

However, on Saturday, February 18, there were reports that a number of Africans were at the station to give statements in relation to the fraud.

  1. Melford said west african universities produced some of the brightest minds and some of them may very well be among the lot so we must embrace them. We welcome the fraudsters!!!

  2. The heart of man is desperately wicked. How can mankind be so imcompassionate to someone stranded, who was scammed before and still want to rob them? Wicked to their own people

  3. These 2 started with their own people…. soon it will be our turn…. i am heart broken for these people, i do understand their cry… but the government need to help them (becasue they created the mess) and help to secure our nation.

Have a meeting with them send home who wants to go and who cant contribute to the nation meaningful, keep the ones who has qualifications… and lets pray for god’s guidance

  4. Do you realize that the only way for these Africans to return to Africa is a direct flight to Africa? They will not get visas to travel to Africa through the USA, Canada, the UK or any other gateway country. If they cannot get a direct flight back to Africa then they are stuck on this little island FOREVER! They cannot even travel to neighbouring islands without visas which they will not get. What a ting created by our brilliant leader, Gaston Browne! Antigua Airways was a wonderful idea!!

  5. The rattling bones of #Mami_Wata and #Papa_Elega have already told me, you, you, him, and even she…

These Africans were promised something by the owners of Antigua Airways, and they’re not leaving until they collect their fees plus interests.

One thing is certain, they’re definitely no #tourist but more like #mercenaries, #refugees, #guerrillas and even #Mask_Terrorists.

UPP do your job and get to the root of this fiasco before it parallels the Giant_African_Snail INVASION.

  6. If we do not see these events as a signal of problems to come with this group, then something is wrong with us. They are creating more mayhem in this little paradise of ours daily. Timely action is needed before it gets worse.

    • @Audley Phillip…It’s, as if the Nattering Nabobs to the “nuff n edge_up crews” which benefit/profit from these types of shenanigans, in our Nation are willing to sit idly by and let the chips fall where they may.

In any developing Nation where #DEMOCRACY is touted, the Antigua Airways fiasco to now, this #refugee crisis would have already caused many heads to roll with other scampering, to set up Go_Fund_Me pages, to collect lawyers fees.
Instead, in Our Nation it’s #caviar, #champagne and #lap_dance fetes for those responsible for this ensuing nightmare, “as white as snow in salmon.”

  7. If the ABLP government do not nip these crimes in the bud now, long term criminality will engulf this country.

I don’t care which country they originated from … send back all dem thiefing crooks and scam artists.

Haven’t we already got enough problems with self-enrichment, unaccountabilities and duplicitous behaviour at the highest level?

WOULDN’T IT BE WONDERFUL IF SOMEONE ELSE IN AUTHORITY CAME OUT AND ADDRESSED THIS PROBLEM, BECAUSE GASTORN NAH DO SO …

I’m still shocked and astonished that ABLP supporters are so so quiet on this growing situation – what happened to all ah unna-, I’m FLUMMOXED, CONFOUNDED and BANJAXED!

From Brixtonian the – ultimate – Grammarian 😁

  8. @memba we nuh too smart (ALP stil have 9 seats) You are so right.
There is only one answer to this travesty deport them back to where they came from. This is just the beginning.
UPP should be holding private hearing and investigating. Many may choose not to talk, but some will spill the beans.

“Dozens of Africans have been gathering outside the St. John’s Police Station on a daily basis, attracting the attention of local residents.”
Won’t be long before they start attacking.
BTW: Do we know what Country each and every one of them are form? We have made a name at the UN on Climate Change and vulnerable small countries. Tell their UN Representatives to get together with each Countries Council to repatriate their people out of Antigua and Barbuda.
This don’t happen they’ll be voting in the next election and for Who?

  9. ALP has truly screwed us, the agreement that Browne signed with Marvellous Mike showed up Browne’s level of stupidity.

Browne’s irresponsible actions is rapidly manifesting itself, demonstrating the things to come…fraudulent activities on a monumental level.

The Africans behaviour will escalate to the wider environment of Antigua. Bank’s and financial organisation should tighten their system because undoubtedly they will start hacking into their systems and siphoning money from customers account.

West Africans, especially Nigerians are credible fraudsters, therefore,Antiguans need to be weary of them otherwise they will be sadly disappointed.
