India Express – The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday opposed a plea filed by the wife of absconding diamond trader Mehul Choksi, seeking cancellation of a bailable warrant issued against her in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) case.
Priti Kothari had said in her plea last month that the ED issued summons to her in Mumbai, even though the agency was in the know that she did not live there, and hence, it cannot be considered that she had not complied with the summons.
ED has said that summons were issued to her last known address as per procedure.
Meanwhile, a special court in a recent order, allowed the bail application of Gokulnath Shetty, the retired deputy manager of Punjab National Bank (PNB), in connection with an alleged fraud involving a paper company.
Shetty was arrested in 2018 by CBI and then by ED in multiple cases linked to the Rs 13,500-crore fraud, allegedly involving Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi. Shetty continues to remain behind bars in the cases.
The court said that it has to be considered that Shetty is 66 years old, and has been in jail since 2018.
“The alleged loss suffered to PNB is not only recovered, but they have gained an additional amount of Rs 55 lakh in interest,” the court said.
