Prime Minister Gaston Browne Calls for Increased Accommodation for SIDS4 Conference
Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda has urged citizens to boost accommodation options ahead of the upcoming SIDS4 conference.
In a recent statement, Browne emphasized the importance of expanding lodging facilities to meet the demand from international guests.
“For years now, I’ve been encouraging Antiguans and Barbudans to build more properties,” stated Prime Minister Browne. He highlighted the incentives offered, including land at reduced rates and various tax concessions for property development and operation.
Despite these incentives, Browne noted a slow response from property owners. “The take-up has been very slow,” he remarked, expressing a desire for more participation from the local community.
Browne highlighted the potential benefits, citing the opportunity to accommodate conference attendees and generate revenue for property owners.
“If we had a number of properties with multiple rooms, we could have filled them for this conference,” he noted, emphasizing the need for quality accommodations to meet international standards.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that hosting events like the SIDS4 conference and the Cricket World Cup wouldn’t solve all financial challenges.
However, he emphasized the potential for economic gains through increased tourism and business activities.
“We’re not making promises, but this is an opportunity for property owners to earn a windfall,” Browne stated.
He encouraged property owners to contact the Ministry of Tourism to list their properties for potential guests, highlighting the importance of providing quality accommodations for international visitors.
Browne estimated a need for at least 2,000 additional rooms outside of traditional hotels and urged property owners to act quickly to capitalize on this opportunity.

How about if all the illegal Jamaicans and Haitians living in Antigua open their homes to the visiting delegates? Let them get a real taste of what Antigua has become under the post-independence era.
It is time for Antigua and Barbuda to become a UK colony again. Look at Cayman Islands, Bermuda, BVI, etc. – all successful places with low crime and strong finances under the colonial flag. Look at us.
We have become a crime ridden place with a bunch of trash and rubbish everywhere. Roads suck, no water supply. Total mismanagement in every way. As an independent country, we suck.
God Save King Charles, may he help Antigua and Barbuda.
You haven’t been paying attention to what’s going on in BVI I see
How Antigua & Antiguans gonna accommodate the influx WHEN WATER IS AN ISSUE
PLUS the locals gonna rob tourists trying to make up for lost wages by over charging them for accommodations and can’t provide water and ac in the homes
Let’s not even try with the bad elements in Antigua waiting/ready to ROB them
Clean up Antigua first GASTON
You a GI people money or wha you a help them out cuz person’s need the help
A disaster waiting to happen. Why wasn’t this call made a year ago? A bunch of fools run this country.
Gaston can you tell the Nation, which leader you have invited to stay at your Jolly Harbour Property?
Long planned and promoted cruise ship at anchor for 2,000+ delegates/attendees only just deemed too expensive by GOAB & now at the eleventh hour PM has the gall to berate citizens & residents?
Accurate planning for major international events in A&B was ever thus, a last minute scramble. Embarrassing.
@ rastaman91. I want to bet you, that the average so called foreigner, is living better than you. Take a look around your country. And I also bet you, that MANY of them, can open their homes to visitors, and make money. Point, Villa, Gays Farm? Would you be asking your people to open their homes? By the way, isn’t rasta, a Jamaican -african thing? Why do you have it? It’s a shame the way blacks still have your kind of mentality.
