Prime Minister Gaston Browne has said that to effectively address plastic pollution in the Caribbean Sea, plastic pollution must be seen, and addressed, as a regional problem with a regional response.
Browne was speaking at the UN Anti-plastic concert, Play it Out on Saturday night.
He said as a major player within CARICOM, Antigua and Barbuda will continue to lead by example in its responsibility to protect the environment.
“Therefore, I am urgently calling on ALL CARICOM leaders to join me in declaring an end to plastic litter and microplastic pollution in the Caribbean Sea,” he said.
Browne also announced the St. John’s declaration.
“The St. John’s Declaration to beat plastic pollution is another step for joint regional action and an appeal to other regions, developed and developing partners, the international community including the UN system, the private sector, and civil society to immediately enact measures to address plastic pollution, particularly in banning single-use plastics.
Our region may be small. But our actions must be big and bold in addressing the issue of plastic pollution. Let us act now,” he said.
The prime minister spoke to thousands of people who turned out to witness the event headlined by Ashanti and Machel Montano.

This is another step in the right direction. The progress being made in this regard by the people and government of Antigua and Barbuda is to be commended. No doubt, others will join in this effort, including some of the major nations. The Antigua powerhouse leads the way. It shows was a small nation is capable of. God bless Antigua and Barbuda.
