PM says price increase for next shipment of fuel could prompt new hikes at the pump, as Gov’t is financially strapped

While the prices of diesel and gas at the pumps were increased on March 15 – to $15.50 and $15.70 per gallon, respectively – on April 22, the Government reduced prices by 27 cents and 55 cents per gallon, claiming it had paid less for its last shipment of fuel.

However, on Saturday, April 30, Browne said the next shipment may bring another increase in the prices of fuel.

He says that passing on the increase to consumers would be the best thing to do.  It would prevent his Administration from having to dip into its already scarce financial resources to subsidize payment for the shipment, he claims.

Browne says he will discuss the matter with the other members of his Executive come Wednesday, May 4, to determine the best way of handling it.

If the Government goes the extra mile to subsidize fuel, he says, it will mean digging deeper into its pocket to ensure that prices are kept down.

Meanwhile, commenting on the recent decrease in the price of fuel, Browne has this to say.

In the meanwhile, consumers are speculating about the new increase, wondering whether the 55-cent reduction will be added back or that amount will attract an additional sum.

The increase in fuel prices has also caused a trickle-down effect on the price of liquid propane gas (LPG), causing the cost of the 100-pound cylinder to increase by $20, said to be a service fee for delivery.  — REAL News

    • @LAUGHING FROM THE BACK OF THE CLASSROOM .. why not write a article (your post too long) and submit to ANR? At this rate your post even longer than a Rawlston Pompey article (Guinness world record). Have you not read in the US they have mostly engaged in budget cuts due to less revenues? You have not seen the same in the UK (see UK Foreign Office rushed £4.2bn of aid cuts, official audit finds, Thu 31 Mar 2022). Are you aware that in the UK gas prices are 25.00 EC per gallon? You do know those jurisdictions collect more taxes than A&B?

      • Nice try Tenman. 25.00 EC. That is a good one. Except that they don’t work for EC dollars in the UK. Your logic is illogical. Or are you just another useful idiot of this administration.

        • @Just Saying, Did you also not notice in another post to this article, I provided the cost of fuel in Jamaica 18.815 EC per gallon, yet their minimum wage (converts to 3.93 EC to our 8.20 per hour) is lower than ours? In SLU their fuel cost is about the same as ours yet the minimum wage in effect (they have none) is about half that of ours (this is one reason why Sandals has no many hotels in slu (also JA)ie their low wages in comparison to anu)

          • @tenman, you always make me laugh because you pretend to have sense but your common sense is non existent. Talk to me about minimum and low wages in these other countries and how they are lower than Antigua when your government is not paying so many workers their wages/overtime etc in a timely manner. And by timely, I mean years. Is that also happening ins St. Lucia and Jamaica? Yes, gas prices going up everywhere, can we at least agree that they government should pay workers so they can purchase gas at these high rates

      • Tenman: How could the Government be strapped for Money? Please explain to me. He is just gouging the eyes of the ordinary people out. What a damn shame.

        • @Wharf Rat – the budget estimates (which include the actuals) are available online for at least the past 10 years (google Antigua budget estimates). Seems unknown to only you that most (some 70%) government revenues goes to payroll. There is hardly enough left back to pay debt. We are slowly changing that (eg debt to gdp ratio moved from 104% in 2014 to 69% in 2017), but covid has increased the timeline (you do know like everywhere else in the world covid has negatively impacted us all?). Our debt to GDP ratio moved from 69% to now a little over 90% mostly due to covid. Maybe foreign to you but with hardly any moneys from tourism, government had to turn to debt to make payroll and pay other bills. Anyway green shoots ie gdp growth near 10 percent this year. Some debt relief probable, the fiscal situation is slowly changing again for the positive

  4. The writeup claims it will quote the PM and then forgets to do it. I get that the author is challenged by their political connections, however that should not stop you from properly editing your submission. Is there no editor? The price for fuel is increasing globally, however based on the sentiments of this writeup, A&B should see no increase. A recent article in the SLU times points out gas prices there are above 15.00 per gallon (see Gasoline prices surpass $15 per gallon in Saint Lucia, Loopnews). Grenada, its 15.00 per gallon. Jamaica its 18.815 Barbados its 26.65 per gallon. UPP and their acolytes need to focus on real issues (eg. 1, How will they finish the car park, 2. implement non burdensome revenue measures). Last few years of them being in office I recall Lovell arguing (even with Personal income tax in place) that existing tax measures were too lenient (low tax to gdp ratio)

    • @Tenman:I thought Gaston,Weston, and the other Cabinet brightly lit bulbs. They had a grandiose plan to finish the Car Park at East Bus Station. What has become of that plan? A way dee money inna NYAMCO GARNE?

      • @WHARF RAT -Moneys from Namco (CIP, loans) were utilized to help meet government payroll. PM stated this on Point FM. Let me remind you that government payroll is some 30 million monthly (not including subsidies to stat corps and pension payments). How much money you figured Namco to have? Other than the WIOC dividend what’s the other sources? Think you well know whatever they get from state insurance is probably eaten up by what they owe

  5. Tenman I agree that UPP should focus on real issues. Here are a few that the ABLP is apparently not focusing on.

    Water
    Paying workers.
Proper healthcare (ask them how long the MRI machine not working at the hospital)
    Stealing Barbuda people lands
Water – we can’t live without it
Water – we can’t live without it
Water – we can’t live without it

    • @Just saying, don’t worry when the results of the election comes out, you will emit sufficient water to even drown yourself. Please don’t, the best is yet to come (APUA a work)

      • @tenman, this is what passes for sensible discourse? If you cannot debate and rebut in a sensible way, maybe you should just shut up and stop pretending.

    • @justsaying you can add paying pensioners to the list. I have a lady renting my house and she is playing ketch up with the rent. Should I put her and her grand children out on the streets? Not only that this lady is partially blind. Please pay the pensioners so i can get my rent paid!

  6. I need 2 mule and 1 donkey. I can not afford these gas prices. Please advise price and time of pick up.

  7. Thats right Gaston. Tek wey all dem money. Thats what they voted for. Just keep applying the pressure to their necks until their no more life. Remind them of the abuse and neglect that they voted for overwhelmingly in 2018. They will vote for you again so bang dem bout as you want.
