Motorists line up to enter Epicurean Supermarket

Prime Minster Gaston Browne has said that there is an adequate supply of food to last the April 2- 8 24-hour curfew.

Several residents have flocked to local supermarkets to shop even though supermarkets will be open during the state of emergency.

“My fellow country men and women, there is no need for panic shopping,” Browne wrote on his official Facebook page.

He provided a list of the containers being shipped to Antigua, “most of which are food items.”

The prime minister said supermarkets will remain opened as essential service businesses.

“Again, no need to hoard shop. Supermarkets are required to practice social distancing and should not encourage massive crowds,” he said.

The list of containers coming to Antigua with food are as follows:

Tropical Shipping 78 containers.
Seaboard Marine 76 containers
CROWLEY 36 Containers
King Ocean 18 containers (KO Shipping)
Geest Lines 14 containers( Francis Trading)
CMA Cgm 26 containers (Brysons)

  1. I’m hoping there will be a clarification by tomorrow, for if there’s a strictly enforced curfew, then how will people get to the supermarket?

Perhaps one member of a household can do the shopping to assist with this

  2. so the place pan lock down and the supermarkets are remaining open , thats whats ur saying, so please tell me if awe pan lock down how awe ago supermarket …

  3. So I think the panic comes from no clarity.. they are saying there is a 24 hr curfew for a week. Will people still be able to leave home for essential travel such as supermarket to get food .. to seek medical attention for an injury etc… if people know they can come out their house to buy food maybe they won’t be stock piling .. in the US they tell them what are the main reasons to go outside they are allowed to go outside . Was that made clear in Antigua???

    • I agree, poor initial communications has caused this confusion. However, a later communication publishing the ‘Guidelines’ has since cleared this matter up.

  4. Most people think that a 24 hours curfew means that you cannot leave your home to buy anything. We need clarity.

  5. Just a note from the UK, knowing you are having a difficult time.
You are allowed to visit the supermarket!
It is difficult but do not stockpile.
In the UK the supermarkets were overwhelmed at the start but now they have too much stock and it is going to waste.
I queued for 20 mins just to get into the supermarket. (They restricted numbers to avoid close contact) Once inside there were very few people.
We are all in this together and I hope I can visit Antigua soon!

    • Yes we will do similar. Persons (no more than 2 per car) will be allowed to go to the supermarket between 7 am and 12 PM. We look forward to welcoming your back

    • Hi Martin:
Thank you for your words of reassurance. Please continue to be safe. We look forward to welcoming you to Antigua and Barbuda soonest. God bless.
