Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, has indicated that the government may soon allow outward flow of funds under new more relaxed guidelines that are to be announced on Wednesday.

Currently, financial institutions are subjected to offering limited cash service where they are only allowed to receive money.

Under the current curfew guidelines, financial institutions are open on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 8 am to 12 noon and all staff and customers ought to be wearing masks.

Nonetheless, money transfer services has seen a spike in business, even though they are only allowed to accept incoming funds and are not allowed to send money outward.

Anthony Smith, general manager for Bryson’s Money Transfer – local agent for Western Union, says there has been a growth in the business since the state of emergency as people living overseas send money to their families here in Antigua and Barbuda.

“We see a large inflow of money from the United States, Canada, Europe and even other Caribbean territories destined for family members here,” Smith said.

The general manager also suggested that these monies have been vital for many families to survive the lockdown, especially with many persons displaced from work.

  1. Tax the outflow of money to make up for the shortfall in revenue. BVI did just that last week to make up low revenue streams and boost money circulation.

  2. Once again, the Prime Minister is very progressive in his thinking How blessed we are to have such an outstanding Leader at the helm in these difficult times.

    • Please what is progressing about letting people send money out of Antigua?
If he were taxing the funds going out of the country like the BVI, I would say that is a progressive step. All your postings are the same. You are nothing more than a troll.

  3. I have seen the crowds at money gram as well it is that a lot of people in antigua going tru hell and depending on some assistance from overseas. If we dont manage this economic crisis well crime would be on the rise. We have to open the economy soon .
