PM Gaston Browne: “DCA has written to PLH demanding remitigation of the environmental violations at Palmetto Point, which were observed during most resent assessment of the site by the Department of the Environment.

Our government supports sustainable development and the overall protection of the ecology of our beautiful twin island state. These recent actions by DOE and DCA, confirm that the system is working and that no developer would be allowed to pursue any development resulting in indiscriminate environmental degradation.”

  1. Mr. Prime Minister you really know how to spin things. A few weeks ago you were at the forefront commending PLH for their work and the interest they show for the protection for the environment. The people of Barbuda have been crying out about the degradation of the environment in the Palmetto Point area. Now the Environmental Division has expressed concern about the breaching of regulations by PLH and the DCA has issued a stop order to PLH, you have now resorted to spinning the issue as if you are talking to just your minions and sycophants. To begin with, the Palmetto Point area is in a RAMSAR Protected Area. Antigua is a signatory to the RAMSAR Convention for the protection of wetlands. The PLH project will have serious negative environmental impacts on the lagoon in Barbuda. The consequent harm to marine life in the area and the Frigate bird sanctuary would be irreparable. Is that your idea of development? You only see dollars. A similar project to the PLH was stopped by the court in 2009 in the British Virgin Islands. The project was to develop a 5 star hotel, a marina and a golf course. The project was located on Beef Island close to a protected area where mangroves and the wetland would be affected. The Virgin Isalnd Environmental Council (VIEC) applied to the court for judicial review of the decision to proceed with the project. In 2009 the court ruled in favour of VIEC and the project was stopped. The Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) in Antigua should take a page out of VIEC’s book if it is concerned about preservation of our environment. Antigua is really a cartoon country. We take nothing seriously. Nothing is sacred, not even the environment. When the environment disappears life as we know it will disappear. Antiguans and Barbudans (and more so Antiguans) wake up before it is to late. The type of Gaston’s so-called development in Barbuda must stop. It is reckless.

  3. Oh no! Oh no! Is this the same top dawg a few weeks ago who said he would send soldiers and police over to Barbuda? This man is nothing but a failed experiment on the people of Antigua and Barbuda. Nothing but photo Ops and sweet talking from this man. He got to go and go now. People of Antigua wake up.
