Frugal Administration: Prime Minister Browne Highlights Fiscal Responsibility in China Visit
Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda has declared that his administration has been the most frugal in the country’s history, presenting what he referred to as empirical evidence to support his claim.
The Prime Minister specifically highlighted the cost-effective measures taken during a recent official delegation’s trip to China.
Browne emphasized that he and nine other individuals, including his wife and senior ministers, traveled to China at minimal cost to the taxpayers of Antigua and Barbuda. The Prime Minister lauded the transparency and fiscal responsibility demonstrated by his government, underscoring the importance of private funding for official trips.
“I believe this is empirical evidence to confirm that my Administration has been the most frugal Administration to govern this country in its history,” Browne stated during the press conference.
He detailed that he and his wife personally covered all expenses related to their travel and accommodation in China, ensuring that not a single dollar was paid by the Antiguan taxpayers. The Prime Minister highlighted that the same commitment to private funding applied to other members of the delegation, including Brian Stewart Young, who similarly privately funded his trip.
Browne revealed that six members of the delegation, including himself, two senior ministers, the chief of staff, and Brian Stewart Young, benefited from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) covering their accommodation and transportation expenses within China. The PRC even financed the transportation from Antigua to London, making the entire trip cost-effective for the small island developing state.
“I made a special request to the Chinese Ambassador, explaining our fiscal challenges, and she graciously arranged for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China to cover some of the costs, including my ticket and that of the senior ministers,” Browne explained.
The Prime Minister highlighted the meticulous attention to cost-saving measures, noting that the delegation predominantly traveled in economy class. Only one business class ticket was purchased, reflecting a prudent use of resources.
“The embassy is also fully funded by taxpayers,” Browne added, assuring the public that the financial burden on Antiguan taxpayers for this diplomatic mission was minimal.
