PM Browne Says Government Will Invest Heavily in Tyra Fenton Following CARIFTA Sprint Success
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his administration will “invest heavily” in sprint star Tyra Fenton following her medal-winning performances at the CARIFTA Games.
Speaking on his weekly radio programme after Fenton’s 100 metres victory on Saturday, Browne underscored the government’s commitment to supporting the young athlete’s future.
“But we’re going to invest heavily in her,” he said, adding that she has “the full support of my administration.”
Fenton has emerged as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s standout performers at the regional championships in Grenada, delivering across multiple events. She captured gold in the Under-17 girls’ 100 metres, followed by another gold in the 200 metres, and also secured bronze in the 400 metres to complete a three-medal haul.
Her performances have highlighted both her sprint speed and endurance, placing her among the top young athletes in the region.
Browne noted that Fenton has already been awarded an athletic scholarship, but said her family has opted for her to complete her secondary education locally before pursuing studies overseas.
“You know, we’ve given her an athletic scholarship. Her mom says that she wants her to finish high school here,” he said, indicating she is likely about a year away from transitioning to college.
He added that discussions are ongoing regarding potential institutions abroad, with the government prepared to assist in identifying the best opportunities for her continued development.
Fenton’s performances at the CARIFTA Games, held at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium, have positioned her as a leading figure in Antigua and Barbuda’s next generation of track and field talent.

I agree completely. Countries do not win Olympic medals without spending money. She is a great talent and we cannot afford to lose her like Janelle Williams. The world powers in athletics identify talent from youth and invest in the talent. We need to do likewise despite our limited resources.
Usual bs that always happens when our stars go overseas and perform. Was she taken serious BEFORE carifta? Obviously no, but she does it on her own and all of the sudden government want to step up. Blah blah blah until all the hype wears off and she is cast to the side. Seeing is believing GB !!!
As they should. Congratulations again young lady. Trust God to order your steps.
WHAT ABOUT THE SWIMMERS?! 12 MEDALS!
@George. Can you read and listen? The PM already said she is on a scholarship but her mother has requested that she be allowed to complete high school here In Antigua. Jeez. Why are we always blinded by politics?
I’m Guyanese and I’m very proud of this young lady. This is real raw talent and she deserves the government’s push and so much more.
Gassy dread please look into this asap for this Antiguan gem, its very rare we find such.
