Prime Minister Gaston Browne is questioning the safety records of some of the airlines that are looking to replace LIAT.
Browne told Pointe FM today that LIAT has a good safety record but that he cannot vouch for the others.
Since news of LIAT’s pending liquidation broke last week, it is reported that at least six other airlines have expressed interest in flying the space.
The prime minister said some of them are “rinky dinky” airlines with poor safety records.
He said one of the airlines in particular has had “two or three” accidents since beginning operations recently.
“There is a high probability of them getting into accidents because they have old assets,” Browne said.
The prime minister is also warning that the quality and comfort of the service will drop in the absence of LIAT.

Yeah, because SVG has been late by 20 minutes but flies planes from the early 80’s, yet Liat can’t at times even get take off clearance within the same hour.
Safety statistics over past 10 years please for each of 6 Caricom named intra-regional airlines, and Liat.
Compare like with like.
This will give the public clarity & facts.
Noted that Liat has indeed established a strong safety record.
A&B careful not to lose ‘hub’ status by not working within Caricom. Don’t assume A&B is the only option.
St.Kitts is also central.
St. Kitts runway & airport can welcome BA, Virgin, Condor, Air Canada, JetBlue, WestJet etc etc.
SKN already has many small intra-regional services.
St. Kitts & Nevis are a twin island destination.
SKN has many hotels & villas/residences, many of them international brands which are reassuring to travelers.
SKN has beaches, eco-sites, history, activities, culinary scene, culture & historic inns.
SKN has an established CIP.
St.Kitts welcomed more cruise passengers than many eastern Caribbean islands last year.
Let us be realistic & understand other nations within Caricom can takeover our historic geographic strength for aviation & gain strategic advantages for years to come.
Final thought – imagine the ramifications nationally if A&B becomes an aviation feeder island not a hub.
SKN, St Kitts Runway is not long enough for the fully laden large transatlantic jets. That is why BA uses Antigua as a hub for St Kitts and others. So it can only welcome the large jets if they stop off shortly after take off as they have to be light on fuel and not fully laden.
Hence the need for connections from ANU
SKB lacks runway, ramp parking and terminal capacity. Try again. NEXT!!!!
Nice try SKB – flashing your credentials in typical West Indian fashion in the hope of stealing the pie. But facts are facts. Better safe than sorry. To passengers wishing to travel south, it is an absolute necessity to know the track record of these new aircraft clamoring to take LIAT’s place. Whatever one may say about LIAT, its track record in the safety department is second to none in these parts. Kobe Bryant, at the highpoint of his young life – talented, successful, famous, well loved – boarded a helicopter headed for a nearby destination. We all know what happened. In Today’s conversations, Koby was……..!
Well, well well! Look at the backlash one gets for standing up and speaking out against blatant injustices! Remain quiet, let might be right, become a house nigger. Just the type of fertile ground for “heroes” like Donald Trump. Well I’d rather be a free man in my grave than be a puppet or a slave. Mr PM, continue to speak your truth boldly on behalf of your people even for those who we all know never have and still do not support the ABLP!!!
The best option to this LIAT debacle is CAL . Mr. Browne knows very well that they fly the same ATR 42 that LIAT flies. He also knows that they have an excellent Safety record, and above all they know the region well. His fight to keep LIAT in Antigua is understandable. It is clearly political. However Mr. Browne common sense must prevail.
i believe Caribbean Airlines surpasses LIAT’s safety record…just saying.
