PM promises a reduction in electricity bills in new term

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has kicked off the 2018 election campaign with a promise to reduce the cost of electricity to consumers.

He told a public meeting in Point tonight (Monday) that the reduction will not come in the manner being proposed by the main opposition United Progressive Party (UPP).

The UPP wants the government to reduce the fuel surcharge to come in line with the price of oil on the international market.

However, Prime Minister Gaston Browne told the first campaign event since announcing the date of the election over the weekend, that he has a better idea.

“The reality is, APUA is not generating enough cash flow so that they can cut electricity prices,” the ABLP leader said.

“So no matter what the UPP say to you, they will tell you they will reduce electricity costs by 50 percent but that is to fool you,” he added.

Browne said the best thing to do is to transition into renewable energy and pass the benefits to consumers.

“What we are doing here is to transition into green energy, reduce the price of electricity and pass the savings on to you,” he explained.

He said the government will introduce “smart metering” so users can monitor their consumption and top up when needed.

  1. the issue is whether the renewable energy is stable enough to reduce the end cost to the end user. the truth is APC charges apua about 6 cents per kwh but apua charges us 32 cents per kwh so the high cost is not with production but rather what apua charges via the lines

  2. upp never said chap the tax man and add many taxes and also said its temporary. and it became permanent. reality is gaston stay true to his words. gaston a blatant person who talks his mind and stay true also he listen to the people. only politically blind people could gi upp an x. people that votr by color.

  3. Funny how more promises are coming without no account for the ones broken!!! But he has a spell over this ignorant greedy electorate.. Im voting against this madness but I still see we gonna have another term of this no good administration!!!

  4. This man just saying stuffs that’s sweet to the ears..Reject Gaston Brown and the Ablp on March 21….Promise is a comfort to the fool.. if he can list even two social programs or any thing this he did to make the lives of the voters easier then ill listen ..No not one..

  5. You see now its election time Gaston and the other sly foxes(MP’s) are right up in our faces. When election done people haffu run dem dung all round Antigua and Barbuda just to ask dem a simple question or favour. Promise Promise Promise! Lies Lies Lies! Get away Gaston!

  6. what the shit the upp is fooling us really. ….the alp fooled the people and r still fooling the people we see through you guys cloak bunch of get yourself rich ministers but one day at a time….if you feel on the 21st history would not be made in antigua think again you will be the shortest term prime minister in antigua. …only two reasons y elections are called early when the country is doing bad and doing worst

    • When the country is doing bad and doing worse LMAO! Sigh so sad the type of ppl who support Lovell….Elections call early to prove that after a few short years the ppl still want the ABLP. In 2009 me hear plenty UPP supporters saying boy me na too sure if awe ga win and yall won im sure that was a shocker to many but just like 2014 the ABLP was confident that the ppl had enough of the big blue wave that was destroying everything in its path. All dem projects Barbara keeps on talking about over and over but yet still unemployment was at its highest under the UPP…Might not be another knock out win because I find a few on the ABLP to be MIA majority of the time and neglectful to their duty so I aint gonna be bias but at the end of the day ABLP is the better choice for the people and they gonna win and thats just that….Have a nice day yall 😉

  7. Why are you UPP supports so mad. You got tour wish an early elections now is tour time to expose the labour party if they so full of s**t

  8. Say it with a smile no say it as if it being said for the first time. LHa laaaahhhaaaa! Time for some antics, acrobatics, gymnastics, gifts and some envelopes with US or EC whichever is your fix. Yes to fix all the problems they inherited will take another term. I alone have the midas touch. my pocket is full and am able to pull rabbits from it if that is your wish! Scandal and secrecy is my middle name and World Boss is a moniker stolen from a JA inmate, lolma! Under performance/non-performance is the norm as well as casting blame. With such a mandate it is such a shame that your old rhetoric will be a resort in which you take refuge. Best PM? Where, how and on what record? oh they were dreaming no scheming the people while getting fit on the hog. Good riddance to you and your bunch of t..I If is.
