PM Mottley’s new relief measures vindicate Lovell’s outside-the-box proposals for easing the squeeze here, analyst says

A financial analyst is blaming “the myopic thinking” of the Browne Administration for “relegating Antigua and Barbuda to being a follower once again.” CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATSAPP GROUP FOR NEWS UPDATES.

The business professional says this country “missed an opportunity to be the leader” in implementing relief measures at this time, and has seen Barbados move to the front in this regard.

Among other measures, Prime Minister Mia Mottley has just announced a reduction in taxes on an expanded basket of goods, to include food and electricity.

This is further vindication of the vision of Harold Lovell, Political Leader of the United Progressive Party, the local professional says.

For several months now, Lovell has been sharing “the caring, visionary, outside-the-box type of measures” that a UPP Administration will implement to help counter the effects of hyper-inflation, the woman says.

Most recently, Lovell announced that his Administration will identify a list of goods that make up a significant portion of the local diet and reduce the rate of duty charged on these goods. And where feasible, he said, the Customs duty would be removed completely.

“This would bring immediate relief to most residents,” the professional says.

However, instead of adopting this measure, she says, “the ALP Administration has tried to discount the proposal by inquiring where the funds will come from to compensate for the reduction in revenue.”

But while they are “dragging red herrings across the trail,” the woman continues, “the Commissioner of Inland Revenue has already reported that tax revenues have recovered to pre-COVID 19 levels. That answers the question from the ALP,” she declares.

Labour Party supporters have also resisted the UPP’s proposed Maintenance of Minors (MOM) programme, asking where a UPP Administration would find the $1 million to establish the revolving fund.

However, Lovell counters by asking where the Browne Administration will find the funds to fulfill the election promises it is now making – given that Social Security payments continue to be late for June, as were government salaries and pensions.

Accordingly, he advises detractors to consider the slew of projects the Prime Minister has announced and consider which are financially achievable when compared to the MOM Programme. — REAL News

  2. Antiguans and Barbudans have totally given up on Gaston Browne and his gang of Renegades. That’s why on Election Day we voting Harold Lovell and the Redeem Team. The ONLY CHOICE!

  3. How stupid can we get. What Mia is doing is what Antigua has had in place now for years. And yes, it was introduced under the UPP. It is called the basket of goods that is exempt from Duty or ABST. And this government has over the years expanded this basket of goods. Lovell error is to think he can do that for items for which there is a treaty.

  4. And worst yet, Mia is only doing this for six months. We have had this in place ever since we started ABST.
You guys are trying everything to make Lovell look smart. But no matter how you try, this guy just doesn’t have it. He is as dunce as they come. He can’t think outside the box and do the side work at the same time.

    • I would not expect anything better from you, maybe you should have typed your reply with a different pseudonym as everyone can see straight through your lack of objectivity.

YOUR MOTTO ‘GASTON CAN DO NO WRONG AND HE IS ALWAYS RIGHT AND THE BRIGHTEST MAN IN ANTIGUA’ , CONVERSELY ‘LOVELL IS THE DUNCEST MAN IN ANTIGUA AND IS ALWAYS WRONG’
      USEFUL IDIOT.
KUDOS TO LOVELL, MILES AHEAD OF GASTON!!!

      • Miles ahead in the rear-view mirror of ABLP. Even when he introduced the construct Antigua initiative, that idea was first published by bloggers on Caribarena, who offered the hen government free advice as to how to jumpstart the economy after the crash of the financial market. First, he claimed the government was going to lose lots of tax revenue. But we rebutted this, showing the increase in economic activities will bring lots of jobs and revenue to the statutory companies and in the end corporation tax at yearend. Then he introduced it as if it were his idea. But everyone close to Lovell knows he has no ability to think outside of the box. He steals others’ ideas and doesn’t give them any credit. Whereas Gaston has shown both locally and regionally to always think outside the box. Look at how he dealt with Scotia Bank. That is why he is being invited to many international forums as featured speaker. How many others, even in the Caribbean, can boast about that? Too bad the haters at home will never acknowledge that fact. Gaston is way above the rest not just in Antigua and Barbuda, but in the entire Caribbean. Reporters in Bahamas and St. Lucia once said they wish he was their PM, after he took on Sandals after bright Lovell made a deal that gave away all our ABST to them resulting in a loss of revenue for the country in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Thats how bright Lovell is. Give me an aspirin. I could go on and on, but it’s enough for you all to chew on for now.

        • Yet under the same jack ass who ass you kissing can’t pay pensioners, govt employed workers and we still have water cuts and power cuts. Keep kissing his ass From the Sideline. When you get sidelined, you won’t even know what hit you. Friggin POS.

    • Any bady dunce Dan Hitler Gaston Brown we want our stimulus old people Dem want dem pensione money 💸

  5. Mia Motley Caribbeans best always miles ahead of the enricher Dictator
It’s never a good idea if it doesn’t come from him and most are not fit to run for office unless it’s his gang of thieves.

  6. Waiting patiently to cast my vote for the party with the plan to resuscitate this dying country. UPP and Harold Lovell is the right choice for Antigua and Barbuda. The only choice for a brighter future.

    • I didn’t know a party that upfront let you know that they will carry the country to the IMF is a bright future for the country. Are we that stupid not to know anyone going to the IMF means trouble for the country? IMF is the lender of last resort. When you do not have any other options. I wonder what kind of economist you are. A very dunce one if you ask me. A UPP that presided over a decline of our economy year after year, until they could manage no more. While the ABLP as soon as they took office drove away the IMF and paid them off the loan of $300 million, which by the way the UPP was able to enjoy the proceeds of. Yet they were not able to grow the economy with that money pumped into the economy. It only shows lack of performance. Lack of knowledge of how to run the country. Worst Finance Minister ever in the history of this country and the world. We will never go through that again. We are much more sensible people than that. Been there done that. Lovell and his gang are a bunch of un-experience dunce and inept people who think they can come fool the people. It will never happen.

      • GASTONAND YOU ARE SO BRIGHT……WHICH ECONOMIC POLICY JUSTIFIES PAYING OFF A LOAN WITH AN INTEREST RATE OF 1.5% PA AND TAKING ON OTHER LOANS WITH INTEREST RATES circa between 6-10%…YOU GUYS MAKE NO SENSE, IT’S JUST THE OPTICS WHEN IT COMES TO THE ABLP.
THE UPP LEFT ENOUGH MONEY IN MBS ETC FOR ABLP AND GASTON TO PAY OFF THE IMF, SO WHAT YOU ARE SAYING DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE, BECAUSE MBS IS NOW DEAD COLD BROKE SO MUCH SO THAT THEY COULD NOT FULLY FINANCE THE OVERSEAS TREATMENT OF THE NATIONAL CYCLIST, AND SOCIAL SECURITY ACCORDING TO MAX IS STONE DEAD BROKE.
HOORAY FOR YOUR POOR HOUSE ECONOMIC POLICIES!!! USEFUL IDIOT

      • Please tell us your qualifications as an economist. Rather than just write words to get a reaction or in defense of Gaston and his failed administration, give us facts. How in the world are you bringing UPPs reputation and performance record into question when compared to 50 plus years of ALP ruining the country? It would take a miracle for any administration to do that. Look at what UPP was able to accomplish and compare with what ALP did in 50 years. Also compare it to what ABLP has done last 8 years, not counting the programs started by UPP.

  7. PM Mottly see the vision of Lovell we ya like we can’t see outside the bottle small island small minded people

  8. Well it seems that some red heads cant see out of the box all when they see gaston doing wrong he still is right .
