PM insists Harold Lovell blamed healthcare workers for high number of COVID deaths
Why is this article making news? The question that Harold asked was why the death rate from covid was higher in Antigua than other countries. He was not challenging the qualifications or professionalism of our doctors and health care providers. The Prime Minister mentioned Grenada and St. Lucia with more deaths, however, on a per Capita basis Antigua has a higher death rate than most countries in the region.

Harold even prefaced his statement by saying that this was not a criticism of the health care workers. This is nothing but an attempt at deflection. Another COVID Kung Fu. Gaston has not denied the serous numbers Harold presented. Why is our mortality rate among the highest in the region despite having instituted some of the strictest measures?

Maybe I missed something because I listen to the recording several times and I didn’t hear anything awful said by Mr. Lovell. Even if the standard of care is not the best, it doesn’t mean the people are not doing their best. That said, someone must still be held accountable and there’s no better place to start looking than at the top.

Here we go again with Harry the Horrible. This is the kind of dithering leadership that people have been pointing out about Mr. Lovell. Antigua’s death toll per capita has more to do with unhealthy lifestyles than with any perceived failure on the part medical practitioners. It is a truism that Antiguans eat a high amount of starch (look at the number of bakeries around the island), greasy chicken, greasy Chinese food, greasy shawarma, greasy fried potato and the list goes on and on. Antiguans also consume lots of sugary drinks, and drink lots of alcohol. As a result, the obesity rate in this country is quite high. Therein lies the problem. It is not rocket science, Harry.
But Mr. Lovell, as clueless as he always is, tries to deflect from the real issue and attempts to side swipe healthcare professionals. “Oh, we support vaccinations, BUT…..” It is the kind of stupid game that wins stupid prizes. If you support vaccinations, why is there a need for a caveat? It’s either you support it or not. Stop qualifying your support. It only proves that your leadership is indecisive and your expression of support is nothing by sophistry!
WASH AN’ BASIN Antigua’s high covid death rate per capita has nothing to do with obesity or life style diseases. The high death rate has to do with the procedures and management of covid patients. A person is diagnosed with covid and the first thing that they do is to send you home to quarantine or isolate. You are then left unmonitored for 2 to 3 weeks while you get progressively worst. Then, by the time you are rushed to the hospital for treatment, you are either intubated or put on a ventilator to help you to breathe. At this stage you are counting your days left on this earth.
So, are you suggesting, like Mr. Lovell, that the medical professionals are responsible? See, in one breath, Mr. Lovell says he’s not blaming the medics, but he asserts what you have also articulated here. The danger of that approach is that it the UPP were to gain power, it is the very medical professionals you would have to work with.
So be clear with your position, are they or are they NOT responsible?
In addition, to suggest that a high rate of mortality from COVID is not linked to lifestyle is simply ignoring the science and the advice of bodies such at the WHO and PAHO.
WASH AN’ BASIN no one knows who is responsible for the covid deaths. Harold Lovell only asked a question. The answer to that question can only be answered from an investigation into the operation and procedures of the hospital re covid patients. It is my contention that the covid death rate in Antigua is high because patients are taken to the hospital when it is to late. Why is that. Your idol Gaston Browne has said the same thing so we are on the same page with respect to that. Again, all Lovell did was to ask a question and Gaston and all his minions and sycophants are spinning it for political mileage. People with common sense know if the truth.
How come almost every time we have a death, you hear from the SLBMC that the person had underlying conditions. And secondly if you and Lovell know the answer why ask the question? I guess you guys have the data to proof your theory is the correct one.

CURIOUS you tell me how I am proving WASH AN’ BASIN right. Neither Harold Lovell or myself are pointing fingers at the medical professional. Again, a simple question is asked as to the reason for the high covid death rate in Antigua. Perhaps Gaston has the answer since he knows everything about the hospital. In any case, he has proffered a reason already by saying the patients are taken to the hospital too late.
Tabor you need to pay better attention to what Gaston is saying. He gave more than one reason. And one was that Antigua is one of the highest ranked countries with comorbidities and communicable diseases. That what the doctors refer to when they say that the patient had underlying conditions. Rather than to ask stupid questions that you already know the answer, all this was about trying to score some brownie points which exploded back in his face. Cause you know nothing will slip Gaston at all. The doctors and nurses have done more than enough. If people would get vaccinated the death toll would not be that high. But you guys are not really pushing that cause.

Funny thing is when the government was pushing the tax on sugary drinks like BDS did since 2016, its the opposition forces who as usual opposed it. It is well known that A&B leads the region in NCD deaths. Strangely it seems unknown the the on purpose dumb that most covid deaths had a preexisting condition. Turns Tabor does not understand that pre existing conditions would be an important variable in any analysis
TENMAN the people who die of covid in the other islands do not have pre-existing conditions (co-morbidities). The whole region is known for its obesity and NCDs. The question still remains to be answered — why the hell is Antigua’s death rate from covid so much higher than other countries. Again, I posit like Gaston Browne the covid patients are brought to the hospital too late. We must stop sending covid positive people home to quarantine or isolate and forget them until it is too late.
Start by preaching to those fat ass overweight members of the government. With all the money they have and make, they sure can eat a proper diet, and see a nutritionist. Some of them look like a heart attack waiting to happen.
Didn’t Gasbag Diarrhea Browne say that no one would be required to take a vaccine that they did not want, but instead they must subject themselves to regular testing. Then he started an auction. Testing started at $100 then $50 then $0 then testing was off the table completely. This guy should do more and talk less. His mouth has the runs.
Guy if you only take the time to listen you would learn that testing has to be in general off the table because our medical resources are not sufficient. They are busy trying to save lives (most unvaccinated)hence have no time to waste on other persons who have made personal dunce decisions (not to get vaccinated). FROM THE SIDELINE you and TENMAN seem to have a problem in understanding simple logic and argumentation. Co-morbidities or not, the fundamental point is the high covid death rate in Antigua can be attributed to the fact that covid patients are brought to the hospital when they are severely ill. Invariably it is too late to save them. Is that point now pellucidly clear (as Sir Lester would say) to both of you?
