PM Browne Warns Protesters of Legal Consequences for Breaking the Law

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has issued a stern warning to Barbuda protesters, stating that while the government respects their constitutional right to demonstrate, it will not tolerate illegal activities or obstruction of legitimate development work.

In a strong statement addressing the ongoing tensions over a housing project on the island, Mr. Browne affirmed that law enforcement would act to ensure order and that individuals engaging in unlawful behavior would be held accountable.

“We respect the right to peaceful protest, but no one is above the law,” the Prime Minister said. “Those who insist on being obstructive and breaking the laws of this country will face consequences. We will take them to court, and they will be duly punished.”

Mr. Browne also dismissed claims that the presence of armed police on the island was intended to intimidate residents. He explained that officers were there to maintain peace and ensure that government-mandated work could continue without disruption.

“Our intent is not to provoke violence but to ensure that the work and objectives of the government are carried out lawfully,” he said. “Any escalation will be the responsibility of those engaging in illegal actions, not the government.”

The Prime Minister reiterated his administration’s commitment to the housing project, calling it a critical step in empowering Barbudans through land ownership and development. He urged protesters to conduct themselves within the bounds of the law and challenged the Barbuda Council to work collaboratively with the government rather than opposing progress.

  1. “It’s amazing no one is above the law” voters was transfered but still nothing came out of it. Corruption thrives under this administration

  2. only gaston is above the law. re voters tranfer. it’s crazy that he said that and nothing came out of it. this place is unbelievable at times

  3. Barbudans buy lands and own properties in Antigua. Why it is not ok with the Barbuda council for Antiguans – born Antiguans- generational Antiguans to own lands and build a house on Barbuda. I am not talking about no politician leasing, purchasing lands with inside information to flip and rip off. I am talking about the simple, humble everyday born generational Antiguan. Who may just want to build a nice little relaxing/ retirement home on the sister island.

  4. Is he dictating instructions to the police? The police are very well aware when the laws are broken. They know when the peace is threatened. Why is Gaston sending promises or threats to the Barbudans? And like a sheep to the slaughter his instructions are adhered to and a peaceful people are coming denied into a corner.
