PM Browne Announces $35M Road Project for Barbuda, Exclusively for Local Contractors

The Government of Antigua & Barbuda has secured $35 million from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) for a major road development project in Barbuda, with bidding restricted to local contractors.

Speaking on Pointe FM, Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed the funding approval and highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring Barbudans directly benefit from the project. “We made a request for the $35 million project to be done exclusively by local contractors, and the CDB has agreed,” Browne said.

He announced that the request for proposals (RFP) will be published within the next two weeks, giving Antiguan and Barbudan contractors a head start in preparing their bids. “I am giving local contractors the heads-up that there will be an opportunity to participate in this road development project,” he stated.

The roadworks will include major upgrades to key areas, improving accessibility and infrastructure across Barbuda. The project is part of the government’s broader commitment to boosting economic development and creating employment opportunities for local workers.

This initiative follows the government’s push for climate-resilient infrastructure, with an increasing focus on concrete roads that can withstand extreme weather conditions.

Browne urged local contractors to stay informed and prepare for the bidding process, emphasizing that the project will ensure long-term benefits for Barbuda’s economy and residents.

  1. But…COwill full a shit also..Look at the road in Jennings…and the roundabout by Sprugoo’s..and the corner at factory Road and Seaview Farm Road, and the Air port road…and…. you get the drift.

  2. In my opinion, restricting to local contractors could create more jobs, but there’s a risk of less competition driving up costs. They need to keep that in mind as well
