The event drew a diverse crowd of roughly 200 people. Many said they wanted to show their support for legalizing or decriminalizing pot, while others said it should only be given to people with medical conditions that could be eased by the drug. Prime Minister Gaston Browne addressed concerns regarding marijuana use during a radio broadcast yesterday, emphasizing the need for respect and adherence to current laws.

Browne shared an incident involving a group of pastors who were troubled by young people smoking marijuana within the confines of a church sanctuary, highlighting a broader issue of respecting public spaces and community values.

“We have decriminalized the use of marijuana and legalized it for medicinal purposes,” Browne stated, affirming the government’s stance on the therapeutic benefits of marijuana. However, he clarified that recreational use remains illegal, largely due to international obligations and potential sanctions against Antigua and Barbuda.

Browne stressed that the discussion was not an attack on marijuana or its users but a call for consideration and respect.

“You have to respect people’s values,” he said, noting that while many are tolerant and open to marijuana use, others are not comfortable with it, especially in sensitive environments like places of worship.

The Prime Minister reminded citizens of the legal prohibitions against smoking marijuana and cigarettes in public places.

“The use of cigarettes, marijuana, any form of smoke in public is prohibited by law,” he reiterated. This reminder extends to events like funerals, where public smoking has become a common sight, which is against the law.

Browne urged individuals to enjoy marijuana within the privacy of their homes, ensuring that the comfort and health of others are not compromised. He emphasized the importance of respecting others’ right to a smoke-free environment, whether it involves marijuana or cigarettes.

Browne called for increased respect and consideration within the community. “We have to become more respectful,” he concluded.

  1. As a people give us an inch and we take a yard. We think thar we can smoke our “herb” anyplace and anytime demonstrating a complete lack of understanding of the laws of our country and absolutely no consideration for our fellow man who simply does not want to smoke “herb”. Let’s see if the PM’s words resonates with his audience and changes our approach.

  2. Mr Pelle, as it stands right you can only get it from those who have an illegal amount i.e lot more than 15g. It would seem that our over-smart government in legalizing 15g failed to provide a legal supply line thereby encouraging the illegal. JUST HOW DUMB N DUMBER CAN THE KNOW IT ALL POLITICIANS GET.

  3. This really needs to be controlled. Was at the beach when some disrespectful persons thought that the public beach was their own yard. Playing vulgar music and smoking. It was such a nuisance not only to the other locals trying to enjoy the environment but to the tourist who left prematurely as one was allergic to the smoke.

  4. Look at the right side of it since it get legal the young people dont care what they do why pm if is for medical why every new born and stick walking people smoking it what you did was wrong there should have an age groupe and how they use it bad thinking bad bad thinking

  5. One next thing is the syrians who have a chalice smoking either hashish or opium inside their so call food shop, all smoke are bad, so I am not of a colonial mentality to just point out marijuana, it is colonialism that band marijuana, since they think the slaves are boys and girls and cannot smoke in their presence, but by the way, have you ever thought about the cancer that bob Marley and king frank I died from? They are smoke related but it’s not spoken about. All smoke are unhealthy and if you doubt me, volunteer for me to lick you up in a room of smoke and see if you come out alive, and the marijuana just turn the youths unproductive and relegate to a territory in the block, with no interest to acquire land and build property or work, if I was a smoker who claimed herb is holy, I do smoke once a month religiously in a special place, so by these youth actions they are drugging themselves.

  6. Gaston Browne, PM: The law(s) which were amended, in the heat of the night, as you and your cronies rushed to jump on the Medical Marijuana band wagon, thinking that it will bring in millions of dollars in taxes is seriously [flawed], so much so, that even the Courts are confused when it comes to what is legal and what is not.

Presently, it’s doing more harm to the Community’s, than you can even fathom.

(i)…smoking in Public (all forms) MUST be properly regulated.

(ii)…the age of those eligible to use marijuana legally MUST be addressed immediately. These children sporting & smoking in public is a disgrace, to the Community and others who don’t smoke.

(iii)…the huge tax breaks and other concessions given to the large scale investors will not keep them afloat, since, the illegal market is still flourishing and the little that law enforcement is doing to curtail the importation from Mexico, Jamaica and St. Vincent is worthless.

(iv)…the Medical Marijuana Industry literally has no export market to ship their products to (outside of a few purchases by tourists), since, these foreign markets are SATURATED with their own products.

The HEMP INDUSTRY’s model governing its products from licensing to production to distribution is flawed; hence, the main reason why there are so much confusion surrounding its ‘legality.’
