PM Browne Slams UPP Over China Relations; Defends Strong Ties with US and China

7

Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda expressed disappointment in two United Progressive Party members for allegedly damaging relations with China. Browne criticized their actions, calling them “Uncle Toms” and accused them of harming the country’s positive relationship with China.

A recent NewsWeek article raised concerns about the US military’s unease over China’s increasing presence in Antigua and Barbuda. The article highlighted Chinese-led developments in a special economic zone, including the establishment of ABSEZ International Airlines Ltd. and substantial investments in infrastructure. Browne labeled those who spoke to NewsWeek as malicious and accused the UPP of politicizing the issue.

Browne emphasized that Antigua and Barbuda maintain strong relationships with both the US and China. He acknowledged China’s significant investments in the country, exceeding $1 billion, spanning projects like airports, ports, agriculture, and housing. Browne praised China’s contributions to poverty reduction, education, and overall development in Antigua and Barbuda, emphasizing a stance of friendship with all nations. He defended the Chinese Embassy’s presence as a symbol of strong bilateral ties and thanked China for its support and friendship.

  1. One simple question, how many Antiguans and Barbudans did the American Embassy employed, when (one) it was located on Antigua soil versus how many Antiguans and Barbudans are presently employed, by the Chinese [fortress] Embassy?

Both the ABLP and the UPP are being played by China – PRC, as Antigua is set up, to be their #base_camp in the Caribbean.
America knows what China is doing; and, China knows what it’s doing.

America knows that Antigua, Barbuda & REFONDA are not territories of hers, therefore, she’s not obliged to offer any assistance in terms of development like the BRITISH should be doing or should have done.

  2. It is said here, the US provides training and security assistance. While it seems China provides loans, cash and financial assistance. Again, bases on the kind of government China is it is reasonable fear on what consequences the country will face in these financial deals and if in breach of any contract.

You can be friendly and peaceful but it does not mean all Interactions are appropriate or in the best interest of national security and international relationship.

Oh I forgot, I am the expert in this area and practically no one in the administration in Antigua at this moment.

  3. If Gaston Browne focused on our failing economy, the increasing rise in crime, reduce taxes and helping Antiguans back into full-time employment, as he’s now fussing – and also trying his hardest – to halt the ascending and unstoppable rise of the UPP.

What he’s doing is futile and deflectionary.

EVERYONE KNOWS IT, EVERYONE CAN SEE IT!

GASSSSSTON is well on the way to becoming Antigua’s worse EVER Prime Minister, after Lester Bird – and that’s saying something …

    • No to China, with its repressive authoritarian style of government. They are offering tempting trinkets to our not-very-bright Prime Minister who is swallowing everything they proffer, hook, line and sinker. America has lots of faults but give me the US every day day 24/7 rather than China. I certainly have no wish to see Antigua and Barbuda swamped by Chinese as they would not like to see Antiguans and Barbudans in any significant numbers in their country. We are doomed anyway under the leadership of this half-wit we clall a leader.

  4. People being skeptical, apprehensive, and wanting to be cordial but distant from a government style and type like China or Russia or North Korea is what good leaders could understand and not degrade. Here, you show incompetence by not respecting and appreciating such feelings from citizens.

Well, you picked the leaders you got.

  5. On his radio station on Saturday, Gaston was asked about the Newsweek article. As his usual tactic, he deflected to UPP. He said they are responsible for the article. The critical issue in the article was the free trade zone agreement you signed with the Chinese that create a country within a country that you never told Antiguans about. If America should put sanctions on Antigua, you go blame UPP and not your ignorance and greed.
