PM Gaston Browne Criticizes UPP as a “Cannibalistic Institution”
Prime Minister Gaston Browne did not hold back his criticism of the United Progressive Party (UPP) during a recent interview following the swearing-in ceremony of Anthony Smith Jr. as a minister.
Browne referred to the UPP as a “cannibalistic institution,” highlighting significant instability and a hostile culture that he believes hampers the growth and development of young politicians.
“Unlike the UPP, which continues to have significant instability, our party offers the guidance and mentorship necessary for young politicians to grow and develop,” Browne stated.
He emphasized the Labour Party’s commitment to providing a stable and supportive environment for emerging talent, contrasting sharply with his depiction of the UPP.
Browne recounted advising Smith privately about 18 months ago regarding the potential difficulties he might face within the UPP due to its toxic environment. This foresight, combined with recent challenges Smith experienced, led to his decision to join the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).
Browne praised Smith’s commitment to better serving the people of All Saints West and ensuring his own professional growth within a more supportive framework.
The Prime Minister’s remarks were part of a broader discussion on the Labour Party’s strategic succession planning.
Browne highlighted the party’s recent efforts to attract and integrate young, capable talent, including Michael Joseph, Randy Baltimore, and Dwayne George.
Browne also hinted at a closer future collaboration between Smith and the Labour Party, though he refrained from making specific pronouncements.
He suggested that this partnership would likely lead to more significant opportunities, reinforcing the party’s dedication to service and community development.

My personal view is that no one should be allowed to win on a particular party ticket and just switch allegiance without repercussions. You are literally selling out the majority of people who elected you in the first place and you should completely resign your seat and seek a new mandate on the party ticket of your choice. This kind of action by MP Smith flies in the face of proper democratic principles. Just my view.
@Audley Philip. That’s an good point. Those who elected you, elected you because you served a particular party. Although some elected you because of “you.” However, I suspect the majority elected you, and in many cases, funded you, greatly due to being UPP.
We’re supposed to be our brothers’ keeper, money, and greed. Gaston, don’t trust you’ll….he knows how fu ketch awe u wid he money…pure nonsense…SMH
Well said AUDLEY PHILLIP
how you WIN ON YPP TICKET….RESIGNED AND IN 24 hrs your swearing in as a MINISTER ON THE OPPOSITE PARTY ALL WITHIN 24 hrs
Is this LEGAL
Pringle a best you resign and stay out 😂
Can be a risky move to change parties. However, if he does a really good job then he can face voters confidently next time around and perhaps they will choose him again regardless of his party affiliation. However, if he doesn’t accomplish much of what the people need and want, then he may not get another chance on either ticket. At the end of the day the people would want to see improvents and progress in their communities and in the country. So, the onus is on him to now hit the ground running and try to deliver as much as possible before the next election.
